Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re transitioning to a cooler, fall-like pattern here in the Gorge, but westerlies should continue through the end of the week. Over the last couple of days, we’ve talked about the potential for weekend wind and lack of clarity in the forecasts. As of this morning, almost all of the ECMWF ensembles have the weekend windless, so let’s go with that. Today, however, should have just enough!

The day starts clear in Hood River with pressures of 29.89/29.85/29.81 for 0.04 (pdx-dls) and 0.04 (dls-psc). Westerlies were generally in the single digits at 6am with 15ish at Viento. By late morning, westerlies rise to 13-16 from Stevenson (when the clouds burn off) to Hood River with 7-10 as far east as Rufus or Arlington. The speeds holds, or perhaps increases just a touch through the afternoon. Evening wind will be 16-19 from Hood River or Mosier to The Dalles with 12-15 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River and 7-10 at Arlington. In another words, the Executive Wing Session at the Waterfront Park is a big maybe today. River flow readings are 63-80kcfs this morning (they’ve been around 120kcfs in the afternoon), River temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 78F.

Thursday sees a strong morning marine push that allows slightly stronger westerlies to develop. An approaching system will send high clouds towards the Gorge in the afternoon and nudge wind quality downwards. The day starts with 15-18 from Viento to Hood River with 7-10 at Stevenson and east of Hood River to Arlington. Midday: gusty 18-21 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 at Rufus. Afternoon: gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 at Rufus.

A trough drops southward from Alaska on Friday and gives a bit of added thermal gradient to the picture. This setup, being rather dynamic, is not ideal. That said… Expect 18-22 from Viento to Threemile to start the day with 10-13 or less in cloudy Stevenson. Midday westerlies pick up to gusty 22-26 from Mosier to Arlington with 11-14 in the still-cloudy western Gorge. Threemile: 18-22ish. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 24-28 from Mosier to Arlington with 20-23 at Threemile and 12-15 or so west of Mosier. Get that wind if you can. We’re currently looking at near-zero gradient, cool temps, showers, and almost no wind for Saturday and Sunday. Have a great Wednesday!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
