Hey skiers and snowboarders! We’re about to tip in to one of the bigger snowstorms of the season, even thought most resorts have given up the game. Cool, intermittently snowy weather continues into Wednesday night. Dry weather returns Thursday, with cool temps into Friday. For the weekend, warming returns. It’s possible we could see a little more snow next week, but nothing impactful is forecast. I’m thinking it makes sense to wrap up the snow forecast for the season on Friday. If it’s been helpful to you in this strange snow year, please consider giving me an end-of-season tip!

Mt Hood Snow Forecast Spaghetti Model
Short term Mt Hood snow forecast

Tuesday starts off cloudy on Mt. Hood. Snow is incoming! The snow level will be 2500′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, 4000′ briefly in the evening, and down as low as 1000-1500′ after midnight. Prior to 5pm, we’re expecting about 0.15” water equivalent (WE) for an inch or two of snow at 5000′. Overnight, around 1.0” WE is forecast for about 9-12” new. Given the strong W wind, it’s possible we could beat that by 20% or so. Wind will be W 20-25 this morning, WSW 30-40 this afternoon, and NW 25-35 after midnight. Temps max out around 29-31F this afternoon at 5000′. Snow surface: granular becoming powder late in the day.

Wednesday starts off snowy and breezy, turns mostly clear midday, and becomes snowy again in the afternoon. The snow level will be as low as 1000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and down around 1000′-1500′ after midnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast in the morning for a couple inches of new. In the afternoon, we’re expecting 0.2” to 0.4” WE additional snowfall for 2-4” more. Wind will be NW 25-35 in the morning, WNW 15-20 in the afternoon,a and NW 25-30 after midnight. Temps max out in the mid 20s.

Extended Mt Hood Snow Forecast

Clear, chilly weather starts Thursday. The free air freezing level will be 5000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and back down to 1000′ after midnight. Some clouds may move in midday, but they’ll probably stay below Timberline Lodge elevations. Wind will be NW 25-20 all day, WNBW 20-25 in the evening, and W 20 after midnight.

Friday starts sunny and stays that way. the free air freezing level rises from 1000′ in the morning to 4000′ in the afternoon to 5500′ overnight. Temps max out in the mid 30s. Wind will be W 20 in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and S 5-10 overnight. Warmer weather is forecast for there weekend. It’s likely to be dry on Saturday and rainy on Sunday. Beyond that… a period of maybe-cool-enough weather is forecast for the middle of next week with the potential for light accumulation. After that: warm weather returns with no sign of snow in the forecast. That seems reasonable, as we’ll be getting pretty close to May by then. Enjoy the fresh snow, and please consider making an end-of-season tip!

GORGE WIND FORECAST

If you’re still seeing yesterday’s and it’s after 9am, try opening this in an incognito window
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Sounds like some of you had epic river conditions yesterday at Rufus and at Arlington. Yay! Next chances for reliable westerlies will be on Wednesday and Thursday. Light wind is forecast Friday and Saturday. Starting Sunday, uncertainty rises to the point that I’m not making guesses.

Tuesday started with pressures of 30.12/30.07/30.02 for gradients of 0.05/0.05. Low clouds were far past Hood River. Westerlies were generally running 10-15mph west of Arlington with 20mph from Arlington eastward. A strong cold front arrives from the NW today. Just ahead of it, we’re likely to see a burst of gusty, super up-and-down, 20-30mph from Stevenson to the Hatch mid-afternoon before the rain arrives and the wind drops below 15mph. Out east, better results are possible, but you should expect very up-and-down conditions: gusty 20-26mph from Avery to Arlington or Threemile. Lighter wind is expected in the Mosier-Doug’s zone today. River flow over the last 24 hours was 177-219kcfs, river temp is 50.7F, and high temp forecast is 55F with clouds.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

A system swings through late morning Wednesday and sets us up for a decent eastern Gorge day. Morning wind will be up-and-down 10-20mph everywhere. After noon, we’ll see a steady build to 27-30mph between Avery and Arlington. To the west, clouds linger and keep the wind below 15mph. That said, we sometimes see a short burst of strong, gusty, post-frontal wind at the Hatch if clouds clear back far enough. If you have to stay local, keep an eye out for that as the clouds break up. High temp: 52F in Hood River and 57F in the desert with partly cloudy sky out east.

High pressure starts to build offshore on Thursday. This sets us up for another windy day. Early westerlies will be around 10mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 17-21mph from Mosier to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 15-18mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 26-29mph from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 53F in Hood river and 60F in the desert.

Light west wind is forecast on Friday, and light/variable wind is forecast on Saturday. We may see a return to moderate westerlies on Sunday, but there’s too much uncertainty to make a precision forecast at this point. See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! Rain is in the forecast this afternoon, although some of you will have to wait until after midnight to get your share. A little wet snow can’t be ruled out for elevated areas after midnight and into Wednesday morning. Our attention then turns to frost potential Thursday and Friday mornings. Road surfaces are probably too warm for ice, and nobody’s seen !CE around here for months, thank the stars!

Glenwood this morning

Up in Glenwood this morning, everyone’s been up since the crack of dawn milking the cows and gathering the chicken eggs in order to make a classic Glenwood breakfast of vanilla custard and medium-rare steak. Oh, it was 40 degrees up there to start the day.

Today’s Gorge weather forecast

Clouds increase from west to east today. Sprinkles are possible early as far east as Underwood. Steady rain arrives to Hood River by noon and slowly creeps a bit farther east, most notably in the hills of Klickitat County. Down low, the rain stays west of Rowena until tonight. Temps rise to 55F (west), 57F (The Dalles), and 61F (Pasco). Westerlies will generally be under 15mph west of The Dalles (but may pick up to 20-30mph after 2pm). East of The Dalles, we’ll have 20-30mph this afternoon. Commuters: expect moderate to heavy rain west of Hood River from 2pm on through the night.

Wednesday’s Gorge weather forecast

We all see steady, moderate-to-heavy rain prior to dawn on Wednesday. Yeah, even you, South Wasco. Commuters: the heaviest rain should clear the area by 5am. Fingers crossed! The rain extends all the way east to Idaho before exiting stage south. At the tail end of this, the rain intensity and cooler air may result in some slow flurries above 1000′. Dry weather sticks around for a few hours after sunrise, but another system arrives from the west midday. Those of you above 1500′ and west of Hood River (this includes Trout Lake) could see a little snow out of this. Like a trace to an inch. Lowland temps Wednesday morning will be near 40 thanks to west wind, and highs will be in the low 50s. Above 1500′, temps are likely to be right around freezing at daybreak (32-35F), but clouds and wind should help us avoid a hard freeze. (dewpoints should be above 30F)

Thursday’s Gorge weather forecast

More concerning weather is in the cards Thursday morning as we have less clouds combined with 850mb temps at -5C and lighter wind along with dewpoints in the 20s away from the Nch’i Wana. That said, the current forecast has enough cloud coverage to protect Parkdale and Trout Lake. We’ll have to revisit the models tomorrow morning and see. I mean, duh. We revisit the models almost every morning! For now, Thursday morning temps are likely to be 32-35F in Parkdale and Trout Lake with cloudy and showery weather (could be flurries!) lasting until 2am. High temps on Thursday range from 53F (west) to 54F (The Dalles) and 60F (Pasco). Wind will be 5-10mph west of Mosier to start with 15-20mph to the east. Afternoon wind rises to 15mph west of Lyle and 25-30mph to the east.

Extended Gorge weather forecast

Friday looks even more concerning for frost as we have less cloud coverage, equally cold (-5C) temps at 850mb, and lighter wind. On the plus side: slightly higher dewpoints. For the rest of Friday: clearing sky, light west wind, and high temps right around 60F. We’ll keep a close eye on Saturday morning as well due to light wind and mostly clear sky. On the plus side, temps aloft will be much warmer. Let’s leave it there for now. Safe travels. -TATAS
