Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a snowy Wednesday morning on the mountain. If you like snow, you’ll want to jump on this, as the snow level is headed up by several thousand feet for the next few days. While we’ll be adding to the snow-water equivalent of the snowpack, we won’t be adding much snow at 5000′.

For Wednesday, we start with snow and see a switch to mixed precip or rain midday at 850mb temps rise to 2-4C with a weak tropical moisture tap. That gives us a snow level of 2500′ early, 5500′ midday, and 7000′ overnight. About 1.3” water value (WV) falls during the day. We should see 3-6” of snow before a switch to mixed precip or rain. Between that switch-over and Thursday morning, about 1.5” WV falls as rain at 5000′. Wind will be WSW 10 early, 30-35 in the afternoon, and 20-25 overnight (more above tree line).

Thursday looks rainy. The snow level will be 7000′ during the day. It’ll fall to 5000′ after midnight, but most of the moisture will be gone by then. During the day, depending on the exact track of the moisture, Mt. Hood will see 0.8” rain minimum. With a small southward shift of the system, more will fall. If you want more, just look at Thursday night: 1-2” rain at 5000′. 1-3” of snow is possible at the tail end of this system. Wind will be WSW 30 early, SW 20-30 during the day, and WSW 20 overnight.

Precip backs off on Friday leaving the mountain in clouds and fog below 6500′ or so. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight. It’s possible we’ll see a bit of snow on the middle slopes during the day; 1/2” to 2” is possible. Wind will be WSW 20 in the morning, SW 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 20-25 after midnight.

Models are disagreeing on the details for the weekend. Generally speaking, ti looks like rain-snow-rain is the pattern. As we get closer, the details become easier to see. So… if you like having the entire mountain to yourself with untouched groom, I recommend Thursday. Wear a Hefty bag over your expensive outerwear, and you should be good to go!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light and variable wind Wednesday morning turns to E 15-20 in the afternoon. Thursday starts with W 10-15 near Rooster and E 10-15 near Stevenson. The wind may turn light westerly (less than 8mph) between 1pm and 4pm before switching back to light and variable in the evening. Friday looks light and variable early. Gusty westerlies at 13-16 plus-or-minus pick up midday. The wind is back to light and variable on Saturday.
