Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday, and a series of weak weather systems over the next few days will give us gusty westerly wind. Models disagree on weekend wind strength, but do agree on westerlies of some sort.

For Wednesday, we’ll starts with gradients of .08 and .00, meaning you’ll probably want to stay in the western Gorge. We’ll have 15-18 early from Viento to Swell with 5-10 in other locations. Westerlies build to gusty 21-25 between Stevenson and Avery this afternoon as a warm front approaches from the west. Beaches farther east will see 10-13. River flow is 71,800cfs and temp is 66 degrees.

Thursday sees another warm front pass by far to the north (Oh, Canada!). The day starts with 0-5 near Stevenson and 10-13 in other locations. Afternoon westerlies build to 16-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles with gusty 12-15 near Rufus and less out east.

A cold front approaching on Friday afternoon combines with a big offshore low near Vancouver Island to send a round of clouds and rain our way. Gradients weaken due to the presence of that low. The day starts with light and variable wind. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 11-14 between Stevenson and The Dalles. As I said before, models disagree on the weekend. A rainy Saturday morning may translate to strong westerlies at Viento and locations way out east. Sunday’s models predict either no wind or 24-28, meaning you’ll want to prepare for either wind sports or fishing, road biking, or fruit gleaning.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: no. Friday: nope. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: 5-8. Friday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: X/X/N 25-30, W swell 3′ at 12 seconds. Thursday: SW5/N5/N30-35, W 3′ @ 10. Friday: S20/S/N15-20, W 6′ @ 8.

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee and Hospital Hill and Underwood have reopened as of right now. Post Canyon motorized use has also reopened. Other motorized trails on Hood River County lands (Pine Mont, for example) remain closed to motorized use.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community activities, all of them by-donation or free, start at 10am with yoga at the Fish Food Bank in Hood River and mindfulness practice at noon at Trinity Body Arts. With the dirt in Post Canyon perfect right now, the women’s ride from Dirty Fingers at 5:30 should be pretty amazing. Speaking of dirt and trails, Post Canyon, and Post Canyon only has reopened to motorized use. Other local trails on private land remain closed to all uses due to fire danger.

Coming up Saturday, it’s the first day of Autumn. It’s also the grand reopening of the Hood River Children’s Park, thanks to all the volunteer hours put in by all of you. Speaking of volunteering, there’s a work party with free brats at Bob’s Beach in Stevenson Saturday at 3. There’s also a swap meet Sunday morning at Luhr Jensen – this one is an all-sport swap.
