Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday was a very windy day on the river, and today will also be quite breezy. As a matter of fact “quite breezy” is an apt description for the next six days or so. Your only respite will be Friday, when the wind will drop from the mid-upper 20’s down into the low-mid 20’s.

For Wednesday, a deep marine layer over Portland and the western Gorge sticks around for much of the day, although maybe not quite as long as yesterday’s. Morning gradients of 0.13 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) indicate that strong wind will be found at most launches today. By late morning, we’ll have 25-28 from Viento to Hood River. Stevenson will follow if the clouds burn off. Otherwise, it’ll hold in the low to mid teens today. Rufus is a question mark today, but given the big eastern Gorge gradient, it should reach into the 23-26 range this afternoon. Arlington: probably 13-16 or so.

Moving on to Thursday, not much changes. Morning westerlies at 17-20 from Viento to The Dalles climb to 24-27 from Viento to The Dalles by late morning. Rufus? Again, a bit of a question mark, but likely to make it into the 24-27 range in the afternoon too. Arlington and Stevenson languish in the low teens, perfect for certain sports, but not for others!

On to Friday, the lightest day in the six-day stretch. Models indicate more of a NW flow around an offshore high. That leads to less marine clouds and warmer weather in the metro area int eh afternoon. As a result, westerlies back off to 21-24, strongest from Stevenson to Hood River in the morning, filling in to Doug’s in the afternoon. Wind east of The Dalles may be affected by easterly flow around an inland low, which could result in light easterlies or calm wind.

Saturday-Sunday predictions from our friendly weather models indicate westerlies in the mid to upper 20’s both days. Same goes for Monday, if you can manage a three day weekend for yourself. Happy wind-sporting!

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Wednesday: NW5-10/10-15/25-30, SW swell 3′ at 15 seconds. Thursday: 10-15/15-20/30-35, SW 3′ @ 16 and W 3′ @ 9. Friday: 15-20/20-25/30-35+, SW 3′ @ 15.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the bottom. Lower Lewis River is open.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
