Friday Gorge wind forecast, Mt Hood snow forecast, and weather: it’s clearly November.

Hi skiers and snowboarders! Between now and the 13th, it’s going to be (mostly) too warm for accumulating snow at 5000′. After that, the Mt Hood snow forecast models have quite a bit of range in temps, but there’s at least some chance of snow. Still… the mode (amount with the highest number of ensemble…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. GORGE WIND FORECAST

If you’re still seeing yesterday’s and it’s after 9am, try opening this in an incognito window AND/OR FLUSHING YOUR CACHE or do a do a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R)

Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Wow… it’s very Novembery out there, isn’t it? Gray, murky, poor air quality… and no wind either! There’s not much to see in the next few days – we might get lucky with some upper teen westerlies Sunday and some mid-20s easterlies a couple of days.

Friday won’t have much – gradients are easterly, but peak wind will only be around 15mph and only early in the morning. Afternoon sees the wind turns westerly at 10mph west of The Dalles. River flow over the last 24 hours was 101-155kcfs, river temp is 56.7F, and high temp forecast is 61F. Warm!

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Saturday starts with easterlies at 20-25mph at Iwash, Stevenson, and Viento. After 11am(ish), the wind fades quickly. By late afternoon, Iwash/Rooster Rock will be 5-10mph out of the east, and Stevenson and Viento will be 10mph. High temp: 62F (warm!).

A weather system swings through early Sunday morning and leaves us in west flow. Showers and clouds linger west of The Dalles; head to the eastern Gorge for best results. It’s possible we’ll see as much as 18-21mph from Avery to Arlington for a few hours in the morning before the wind drops below 10mph in the afternoon. It’s even possible we could see very gusty 15-20mph from Viento to the Hatch for a couple hours in the morning. Ensembles are not super optimistic, but there’s at least a chance. High temp: 57 degrees with rainbows.

Easterlies return Monday and linger into Tuesday, but strength isn’t inspiring yet; we might see 25mph at Iwash Rock on Monday, but Tuesday looks lighter. I’ll leave you there for now. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon – before it gets too cold for me!

MT HOOD SNOW FORECAST

Hi skiers and snowboarders! Between now and the 13th, it’s going to be (mostly) too warm for accumulating snow at 5000′. After that, the Mt Hood snow forecast models have quite a bit of range in temps, but there’s at least some chance of snow. Still… the mode (amount with the highest number of ensemble members) isn’t much above zero, and the most likely range is 0-15” or so by the 20th of November. Don’t panic! It’s still early! Snow will come!

Friday and Saturday will be too warm for snow. We’ll see a burst of rain Saturday night followed by a transition to snow after midnight. If we get really, really lucky, orographic (terrain-enhanced) assistance will give us 2-5” at 5000′ as the snow level falls to 4000′. By Tuesday, the snow level will be back around 10,000′, and no snow is expected between then and the 13th. Beyond the 13th, uncertainty is quite high – the forecast for temps at 5000′ ranges from -1C to +3C every day, which probably means the snow level will be bouncing around a lot and timing differences haven’t resolved. So, just cross your fingers and keep up the pre-season training program!

Coming up on the 7th, there’s the annual Gorge Winter Gear Swap at Hood River Valley High School on Saturday, November 7th. 8Am early admission ($25), and 9am regular admission ($5/person, $10/family). On the same day, but from 4-6pm, there’s the Nordic Gear Swap at Working Hands Brewery in Hood River. It’s time to get new-used gear or sell your old stuff!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! There’s a blue wave in the country, but there’s a gray Nothing in the Gorge this morning. Not only is it great, but the air quality is approaching “shit” – it’s 70-163 below the inversion and especially bad in the Hood River and snow-free Snowden areas. Air quality is likely to stay poor-ish until Sunday, when west wind arrives to clean it up. Other news: on-and-off drizzle is forecast this weeks with the heavies rain arriving Saturday night into Sunday. The lowest the snow level gets is 4000′ on Sunday morning before bouncing back up next week.

Looking at this morning, I can hardly stand the gloom! It’s 33 in Glenwood and 70 inside my house. It’s a tropical morning in here minus the sandy beaches, warm ocean, blue sky, and palm trees. I do have several spider plants and an orchid that hasn’t succumbed to my supreme orchid-killing skills. Yet. Today remains mostly cloudy. Drizzle arrives for the western Gorge, west of Wyeth, around 7pm and lingers into Saturday morning. Heavies rain will be 7pm to 10pm. Today’s high temps will be unseasonably warm: right around 60 degrees. I see garden cleanup in my future! Today’s wind: E 15 in the usual spots this morning and W 10ish for many of us this afternoon.

Saturday will be cloudy, but it’ll be dry for all the daylight hours, however few there are. I looked it up: 9 hours and 53 minutes of daylight. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CAN THE BLUE SENATE PASS THE YEAR-ROUND DST BILL?!?!? I know it won’t give us more daylight – that’s determined by the tilt of the earth in relation to the sun, but it would be nice to have light in the evening. Anyway… thanks to all that darkness, morning temps will be in the low 40s. Add in drizzle from Wyeth westward until 4am, when you’ll hopefully be sleeping. After 10pm, heavy rain arrives for areas west of Hood River with light rain to Biggs. In between: partly cloudy in the morning and increasingly cloudy in the afternoon. Wind: E 25mph near Iwash (pecker) Rock and Stevenson in the morning and 10mph in the afternoon with light wind elsewhere. High temps will be in the LOW SIXTIES WARM WARM WARM!

Showers continue on and off as far east as The Dalles most of the day Sunday. This results in rainbows, on-and-off, most of the day Sunday. Low temps: low 40s. Highs: 56-59 degrees. West wind peaks at 15mph from Stevenson to Arlington in the morning before dropping under 10mph in the afternoon.

Monday looks dry with east wind and highs in the mid 50s. Tuesday brings light rain west of Wyeth (exit 51 on I-84) and dry conditions elsewhere with highs around 60 degrees. That’s all for now. Safe travels. -TATAS
