Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Our Mt. Hood resorts are reporting base totals in the 2 to 2.5 foot range after the last few days of snow. Remember, that’s uncompacted snow, and the snow they received was very fluffy. Will that be enough for the shredfest to begin? I’m not even going to guess! What I will do is tell you the weather: several more inches of snow fall in the next couple of days. That’s followed by a couple days of dry weather and then, possibly, another shot of snow over the weekend. Before I forget, and before you go up to the mountains to earn your turns today, remember that all that snow has been falling with strong east wind. Your normal wind-favored spots will be scoured, and your normal scoured spots will be wind-favored. Do be cautious out there! Okay. Wednesday’s weather. Terrain-enhanced snowfall (we call that orographic) falls in the strong easterlies for the morning, backing off in the afternoon. The snow level will initially be near 1000′, but it will fall to the surface in the evening. Today’s daytime precip looks like 0.2-0.3” water value (WV), for 3-4” of fluffy pow-pow. Another 0.1” WV falls tonight, for an inch or two of new. Wind will be ENE 30 in the morning, NE 10-15 in the afternoon, and E 5-10 after midnight. Clouds and flurries persist on Thursday before the sky clears above 5000′. The snow level will be 0′ all day, at least near Mt. Hood. Elsewhere: 500-1000′. Enough precip sticks around in the morning, 0.05” WV or so, for up to an inch of new. Wind will be E 5-10 early, SE 15 in the afternoon, and S 10 after midnight. Friday looks clear and sunny and cold. The free air freezing level will be between 0′ and 500′ all day. Mountain temps will be in the teens. No precip. Wind: S 10 early, light SE later, and S 10-15 overnight. Saturday starts off partly cloudy. A low pressure system offshore will send some precip to the mountains overnight. Models disagree on the location of this system, and that will have a huge impact on mountain snowfall, not to mention valley weather. Well, I guess I mentioned the valley weather, but you’ll have to read the TATAS for that.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Widespread easterlies continue on Wednesday, and regular old easterlies stick around through the weekend. For Wednesday morning, you’ll find 30-35 at Rooster and 20-25 at many other locations, including the far eastern Gorge. That’ll continue all day, with Rooster dropping to 20-25 in the afternoon. Thursday starts with 30-35 near Rooster and 20-25 near Stevenson. The wind settles out at 25-30 in the normal east wind areas in the afternoon. Friday starts with 20-25 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson. The wind decreases to 20-25 in the afternoon. On Saturday, we’ll have stronger, possibly more widespread east wind. COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is back on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy conditions this morning stay that way all day. It’s possible a few snowflakes will fall. Temps will be in the upper 30’s all day, maybe making it to 40. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Thursday looks cloudy and cold. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and mid 30’s later. Light east wind. No rainbows. Friday starts out with a Nothing and turns sunny, in theory. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and mid 30’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Models like the idea of snow in the Gorge Saturday night. See TATAS for details.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Road and Mountain Biking

We’re heading into a period of colder weather with overnight sub-freezing temps. That means you’ll want to ride Syncline. You’ll also do major damage if you do, as the trail will thaw during the day. Please don’t. Same goes for Whoopdee and areas of Post not under the canopy. As for those higher-elevation trails, you can say goodbye. They’ll be snow-covered and gone by Wednesday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the White Salmon Fun Run, meeting at Harvest Market at 7am. There’s Zumba Gold at the Hood River Adult Center at 9 and senior yoga at FISH food bank at 10.
