Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and most locations on the river have light and variable wind despite a Portland-dalles gradient of .06. That’s a decent sign for a repeat of yesterday, when there was enough wind to cool off from the 90-something temps. If you’re desperate to hit the water early, try Viento to The Tunnels for 12-15. Models disagree a bit on today’s slow build. The GFS tops things out at 13-16 from Stevenson to Doug’s. The Euro likes 20-23. Let’s split the difference and go with 16-19 this afternoon, probably fading near Hood River and Swell mid-afternoon.

It appears the desert pressure will drop Thursday afternoon due to intense heating, leading to stronger westerlies than Wednesday. We’ll start the day with 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. The GFS seems to think the wind will back off to 18-22 from Stevenson to Swell mid-afternoon, so watch out for that.

A bit of a marine push arrives Thursday night into Friday morning as a trough approaches. That will, of course, help the wind. It appears we’ll start with 21-24 from Viento to Mosier for Dawn Patrol. By mid-morning, you’ll find 24-27 from Stevenson o Rufus with 10-13 way out east. That’s the story for the rest of the day, with a good chance of a late day drop-off to 18-22 between Stevenson and Hood River. The general picture for the weekend appears to be 20-23 Saturday and mixed forecasts for Sunday. Models do seem to agree on big west wind days Monday and Tuesday.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 18-21. Thursday: 21-24. Friday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 13-16 late. Thursday: 10-13. Friday: 8-11. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: W5-10/N10-15/20-25, NW swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Thursday: 5-10/5-10/25-30, NW 5′ @ 8. Friday: X/5-10/25-30, NW 5′ @ 8.

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

Hot and clear with wind at 10-15mph or so for the next three days.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a lovely cool morning, and you know what to do: open all the doors and windows and let in the outside air! Temps will climb into the upper 90’s later today. Light to moderate west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks clear. Temps will be near 60 early and in the mid 90’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday looks like a carbon copy of Wednesday. It appears temps will finally drop below 90 next Wednesday, giving you plenty of time to install a new air conditioner.

Road and Mountain Biking

According to the USFS website, Gorge 400 from Wyeth to Herman Creek has reopened. It’s brown and burnt and dusty, not the lovely green trail you remember, but it has reopened to bikes. Plains of Abraham is open. It joins Gunsight to complete our slate of open mountain bike rides. Get out and get some, and take plenty of water because it’s going to be hot. Trails in Hood River County are now closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Bicycles are fine. The Petersburg Loop east of The Dalles is currently closed and under a level 3 evacuation order due to the Substation Fire.
