Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

One more day of snowfall on Mt. Hood leads into a 48 hour encounter with an atmospheric river straight from the tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean. There’s a chance we may see mixed precip Friday, preserving the snowpack some, but accumulation will be limited, and below 5000′, there will be only rain. Snow returns on Saturday morning followed by a couple days of dry, cold weather.

For Wednesday, the mountain starts off clear. Clouds quickly move in, and snow starts up somewhere between 1pm and 6pm… models do not agree. Nor do they agree on precipitation amounts, even though we are talking about a 12 hour forecast! Anyway, the snow level will be 4000′ for the 24 hour period, except in the Gorge. About 0.5” to 1.0” water value (WV) falls overnight, for 5-10” of new snow. Model disagreement is represented in that wide range. Wind will be SW 10-15 early, S 10-15 midday, SW 25 this afternoon, and WSW 35 overnight.

The first half of Thursday brings light snow flurries. Snowfall picks up around 1pm and then switches to rain overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ early, rising to 6500′ overnight. 5000′ temps will be 2-6C, far too warm for snowfall! We’ll see about 0.2” WV by 4pm, for an inch or two of new snow. About 0.5” WV falls as rain at 5000′ overnight. Wind will be WSW 30 early. It then switches to SW and builds to an impressive SW 70 in the evening and SW 85 overnight. Cut those speeds by 60% below tree level.

Rain continues for the mountain on Friday, although there may be a few periods of mixed precip or wet snow mixed in; 5000′ temps will fluctuate in the 0-4C range. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 5000′-5500′ midday, and will finally fall to 4000′ after midnight. Models really disagree on precip amounts on Friday. Worst case scenario is 1.5” WV that mostly falls as rain during the day. About 0.2” WV is forecast to fall as 1-2” of snow overnight. Wind will be SW 85 early, holding in the SW 50-60 range most of the day. Cut those speeds by 50-60% below tree line.

Snow continues on Saturday morning as the snow level drops from 4000′ to 2500′. As of right now, it looks like the mountain will see 3-5” of new. Dry weather returns after that.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies at 40-50 on Wednesday morning near Rooster decrease to 20-25 in the afternoon. Thursday starts with light west wind near Rooster and light easterlies near Stevenson. The easterlies pick up to 20-25 in the afternoon. Friday starts with W 10-15 at Rooster and light easterlies at Stevenson. The central Gorge will likely be calm during the day with westerlies near Rooster and southerlies in the far east.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Road and Mountain Biking

I saw a Sprinter Van returning from Syncline yesterday with three muddy bikes on the back. Freeze-thaw conditions exist there right now, so please don’t ride there or you’ll do significant trail damage. Same goes for Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Post. It’s muddy, unless you’re under the canopy. Please don’t. Go ride your gravel bike or do something else, and leave the trails be for now!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the White Salmon Fun Run, meeting at Harvest Market at 7am. There’s Zumba Gold at the Hood River Adult Center at 9 and senior yoga at FISH food bank at 10.
