Gorge Wind Forecast

A few days of westerlies are on tap prior to what’s looking like a calm day Friday and easterlies for the weekend. Nothing nuking is in the picture, but you’ll still be having plenty of fun!

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 29.89/29.91/29.91 for a small east gradient. Wind speeds agree: light easterly most places with 10-15 at Viento prior to dawn. The wind quickly switches to westerly. By 11am you’ll find 15-18 from Stevenson to Swell. Afternoon wind will be gusty 18-22 from Swell to Doug’s with potentially lesser wind, 14-17, from Stevenson to Swell. River flow readings are 56-90 kcfs. River temp is 66F. High temp forecast is 86F.

Our first significant fall weather system swings through on Wednesday. A cold front moves inland while a low pressure system swirls offshore. The day starts with clouds and drizzle in the west with westerlies at 11-14 under the clouds. East of The Dalles, the day starts with W 18-22. That holds for most of the day. Afternoon wind may rise briefly to gusty 22-26 from Avery to Rufus. Don’t make bets on this, as it’s frontal, and this situation doesn’t always see the wind materialize on the river. High temp: 71F.

Thursday starts out with calm wind all through the Gorge. Intermittent rain falls as far east as Arlington during the morning. The wind is likely to be more up-and-down than our normal gustiness. By midday, you’ll find 7-10 from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Arlington. Afternoon: 21-24 from Mosier or Lyle to Rufus. High temp: 68F. Friday looks calm. Saturday and Sunday look like sailable/kiteable/wingable/paddle-worthy easterlies.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Thursday brings a showing of the bike movie “Reset” at River City at 8pm. The Post and Pint will shift to 5pm to accommodate this. The movie is free, and there’s a raffle to benefit the HRATS.

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is at 5pm this week (9/27).

Cycling

It’s still dusty and dry! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
