Gorge Wind Forecast

If you like easterlies, things are looking up for you in the extended forecast. You’ll just have to make it through Tuesday, when you can enjoy some westerlies as a cold front swings through and high pressure builds off the coast.

Tuesday starts with light and variable wind everywhere except Viento, where gusty 20’s are happening. Give that front ’til mid-morning to swing through. We’ll then have 20-23 in the west and 24-28 from Rowena to Arlington. The wind starts to fade, but steady out, mid-afternoon. At that point, we’ll have 13-16 in the west and 22-25 from The Dalles to Arlington. River flow is 76,300cfs and temp is 57 degrees.

Wednesday starts out light and variable. The wind builds to east 15-20 at Rooster, Stevenson, and Viento in the afternoon. Tuesday starts with 25-30 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson and Viento. The wind holds all day. A weak front swings through on Friday with strong high pressure offshore. That gives us gusty 27-31 in the afternoon.

Looking out into the extended forecast, a deep cold pool starts to set up in the desert over the weekend. That gives us a transition day on Saturday followed by easterlies Sunday through Tuesday. While Sunday’s wind will be “strong”, you can bump your expectations up to “nuking” easterlies for Monday and Tuesday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast was on winter break. It came back for a visit today. Tuesday: 15-20/15-20/25-30, NW swell 8′ at 11 seconds. Wednesday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, NW 7′ @ 10. Thursday: 10-15/20-25/5-10, W 4 @ 9.

Road and Mountain Biking

Significant rain has fallen over the last week or so. Post, Whoopdee, and Hospital Hill are currently under a “too muddy to ride” advisory. Try Syncline. Remember that the southern half of Whoopdee has been logged (is gone). Riding Underwood? No parking at the trailhead – you’ll need to drive ½ mile east of the trailhead and park there. In other bike news: the HRATS have a board meeting at the Hood River Fire House at 5:30 Monday (the 21st) and they have a work party in Post, meeting at Family Man, on 10/26 at 9:30am.
