Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Tuesday, and another weather system sweeps through the region today. It appears to be Autumn, which means the wind will behave like it’s fall – gusty, inconsistent, and difficult to predict. So… here we go with the Tuesday-Wednesday forecast.

For Tuesday, calm morning wind stays that way, at least in the west. Rain moves in mid-morning in the form of a cold front. It’s going to be a battle between the offshore low pressure and the power of the approaching weather system. If we’re lucky, westerlies will pick up to gusty 18-22 east of Biggs mid to late afternoon. River flow is 107kcfs and temp is 68 degrees.

Wednesday looks showery all day. Offshore high pressure starts to build in the afternoon, but probably not early enough to have a significant impact on the wind. It’ll be light and variable in the morning. If every thing plays out just right, the wind will pick up to gusty 10-13 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Biggs.

Thursday’s a better setup, although weak disturbances moving through will knock down the wind quality just a bit. Morning westerlies looks like 10-13 from Viento to Moiser. Afternoon wind picks up to 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles. As of right now, Friday looks like 23-26 from Moiser eastward.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Tuesday: SW15-20/SW15-20/S20-25, seas 11′ at 10 seconds. Wednesday: W5-10/W5-10/LTW, W 9′ @ 10. Thursday: W5-10-/LTW/N20-25+, NW 5′ @ 10. Jones Tuesday/Wednesday: nope. Thursday: 8-11. Sauvie’s Tuesday: S 20-30. Wednesday: nope. Thursday: 9-12 late.

Road and Mountain Biking

Brown pow is HERE! Tack alert for all trails! 130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in the 150 area are closed for timber harvesting. Upper 8 Track is now closed due to logging. Motorized use is now permitted in Post (thanks, rain!), and east side and Middle Mountain will reopen on Wednesday.

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
