Friday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather: breezy today, frosty Saturday morning. Whoopdee work party Saturday, 9am.

Hi friends! Another windy day is on tap for Friday, and then we’ll have easterlies Saturday. Starting Sunday, uncertainty is quite high. Easterlies of some sort are the most likely outcome, but that’s not for certain. And looking deeper into the future, the uncertainty continues. All I can say for now is that there’s not…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temiraโ€™s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

Thereโ€™s โ€œTemiraโ€™s Awesome Travel Advisory Serviceโ€ and โ€œValuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areasโ€ – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temiraโ€™s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ainโ€™t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. Thatโ€™s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Another windy day is on tap for Friday, and then we’ll have easterlies Saturday. Starting Sunday, uncertainty is quite high. Easterlies of some sort are the most likely outcome, but that’s not for certain. And looking deeper into the future, the uncertainty continues. All I can say for now is that there’s not a strong sign of wind after this weekend. Eventually there will be… after all, this is the Gorge!

Friday started with pressures of 30.23/30.11/30.04 for gradients of 0.12/0.07. Portland was cloudy, and there were a few scattered marine clouds moving through Hood River. Early wind was 18-21mph most places between Stevenson and Rufus with 11-14mph between the Hatch and Hood River and also at Arlington. Thanks to strong offshore high pressure and lingering clouds on the west side, we should see solid westerlies for most of the day. Expect 22-25mph from Viento to Mosier once the clouds burn back a little. Stevenson and the Rowena and Rufus zones should be in the 18-21mph range this morning. There’s a chance of 24-27mph at Rufus given how far the marine clouds have pushed inland and how strong the pressure is offshore. My fingers are crossed for you.

For most of the afternoon, 22-25mph wind fills in from Stevenson to Doug’s and lingers. To the east, from Avery to Boardman, 18-21mph is likely. It’s possible the eastern Gorge wind will beat predictions thanks to strong offshore high pressure, but the strongest wind is likely to be near the Hatch this afternoon. From mid-afternoon on, the wind starts to fade. We’ll finish up with 18-21mph or so from Stevenson to Rufus with lighter wind to the east. River flow over the last 24 hours was 60-98kcfs, river temp is 61F, and high temp forecast is 60 in Hood River and low to mid 60s in the desert.

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

High pressure builds inland on Saturday and turns the wind offshore, easterly. We’ll see 22-25mph at Stevenson, Iwash, and Viento in the morning. After noon, the wind slowly fades. Iwash/Rooster finishes the day at 15mph, and Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento land at 10mph. High temp: 61F and partly high overcast.

The GFS deterministic gives us very similar conditions for Sunday, but the Euro ensembles aren’t so sure โ€“ they offer up about a 30-40% chance of a weather system and rain. Beyond Sunday, uncertainty is high, too high for me to hazard a guess about the forecast. So, make the most of today (Friday) and Saturday! Oh, one last thing: morning temps Saturday and Sunday are likely to be well below 40 degrees. Plan for chilly conditions on the Nch’i Wana. Hope to see you out there soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! It’s Friday! Hooray! Even though it’s Friday, the forecast for Sunday is still rather uncertain. How exciting is that! Uncertainty is cool! Being able to tolerate uncertainty makes life much easier! The rain forecast is uncertain too – it looks like we’re likely to get at least a little rain sometime between now and Tuesday followed by another dry period next week. In other words, there’s not much to talk about in the Gorge weather forecast. I sure hope there’s something to talk about this winter. That was the whole purpose of TATAS when it started โ€“ winter commuter safety!

It’s not safe in Glenwood this morning, at least it’s not safe to go outside without a jacket. Clearly clear, and clearly not windy there, because last I checked it was 24 degrees. This bodes poorly for tomorrow morning all through the Gorge (foreshadowing). For the rest of the day today, expect breezy conditions: west wind at 25mph most of the day west of The Dalles and 20mph east of The Dalles. High temps today: 58 in Stevenson, 60 in Hood River, 64 in The Dalles, and 63 in Pasco. After a cloudy start west of Mosier and east of Celilo Village, the sky turns clear east of Mosier and partly cloudy to the west.

Overnight, high pressure builds and dry air moves in: dewpoints fall to 21-34 degrees, the sky clears, the wind turns light easterly, and a Nothing cloud forms along the Nch’i Wana. Frost-prone areas: everyone east of Viento. In the near vicinity of the Nch’i Wana (Columbia River), frost is less likely thanks to the Nothing cloud.

TATAS recommends you take some time Friday to harvest all your tomatoes and peppers and basil and other sensitive produce โ€“ that includes winter squash, which will store better if not subjected to a freeze.

Away from the Nch’i Wana (Parkdale, Odell, Sevenmile, South Wasco, all of you in the hills in WA except in the east wind zones), 31-34 degrees is likely for daybreak Saturday. Sunshine arrives for a bit midday, and then high clouds are forecast for the evening. Highs: 62 in Stevenson, 61 in Hood River, 63 in The Dalles, and 58 in Pasco. East wind will be 20-25mph in the morning at the usual windy spots from Viento westward. Afternoon: 10-15mph in the western Gorge and 5-10mph east of The Dalles and up near Goldendale and down in South Wasco County.

If you want to do a fun weather thing on Saturday, it’s the annual American Meteorological Society Winter Weather Conference at OMSI. Start time: 10am.

Looking at Sunday, we see high uncertainty. It might rain, and it might not. There’s a better chance of light rain early next week, but again, uncertainty is quite high. The unpredictability continues into the latter half of next week. This is a good reason to vote blue, to vote for funding government programs: better funding for NWS and meteorological research and activities results in better forecasts. Safe travels. -TATAS
