Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! A couple days of moderate east wind is on tap for the weekend โ€“ weather models have finally coalesced and agreed on the weather through the middle of next week. We’ll have light to moderate westerlies Monday and Tuesday followed by too-light wind on Wednesday. No signs of a big day in the Gorge wind forecast, but in the weather overall, it’s nice to see some rain!

Saturday started off with light offshore gradients: 30.27/30.29/30.27 and light/variable wind all through the Gorge. Exception: Viento started the day at 16mph (and 42 degrees, brrr). Easterlies build to 15-18mph at Iwash/Rooster, Stevesnon, and Viento for a few hours this morning before fading this afternoon. Iwash/Rooster finishes the day light and variable, and Stevenson and Viento finish with easterlies at 10mph. River flow over the last 24 horus was 64-97kcfs, river temp is 60.4F, and high temp forecast is 61F with some high clouds.

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Sunday looks a little stronger thanks to help from an offshore low. The mid-morning easterly peak reaches 20-25mph at Stevenson and Viento and 17-20mph at Iwash/Rooster. The afternoon fade happens fast and hard; Stevenson finishes the day under 10mph, and Iwash/Rooster finishes the day light westerly. High temp: 59 and cloudy.

Monday sees that low move inland which allows light west flow to develop. Morning wind wll still be light easterly. Afternoon: 15-18mph from Mosier to Rufus with under 10mph elsewhere. High temp: 59 degrees with rain west of Cascade Locks.

Not much happens Tuesday morning, but Tuesday afternoon has some potential. About 70% of the ensemble members give us westerlies at 20mph somewhere in the Gorge, probably east of Mosier. Beyond that, uncertainty rises AND there’s no sign of solid westerlies. So, I’ll leave you here for now. Have a fantastic day out there in the Gorge!

50th percentile rain through next Thursday

Good morning, neighbors! Well, that about does it for most of our gardens โ€“ mine’s on the Heights in Hood River, and it was about 26 degrees there this morning. We’ll have another cold morning on Sunday, but it might not matter after today’s freeze. We then move into a cool, showery pattern for a few days. According to the Euro ensemble, most of the rain will stay wst of The Dalels, but even the desert should pick up a tenth or two of moisture. Fingers crossed! Beyond the middle of next week, uncertainty rises.

It is Saturday, and Glenwood did a damned fine job this morning: 19 degrees! Way to go, overachiever! Elsewhere in the Gorge, we had mid to upper 20s many places. Parkdale was reading 24-30 degrees. Middle Mountain, above the inversion, was above freezing. Near the Nch’i Wana, where the air is a bit more moist, the dewpoint and temp coincided for a little Nothing cloud. Rest of today โ€“ we’ll have some high clouds and temps right around 60 degrees. If you head west of Hood River, you’ll find east wind: 15-20mph in the usual windy spots. Afternoon wind falls to 10mph or less.

Sunday morning brings another round of Frost despite a few high clouds. More clouds push in during the day as a weak weather system makes friends with the Gorge. A little rain falls west of Cascade Locks between 5pm and 11pm โ€“ the rain could be heavy enough to make for a short stint of miserable driving conditions early evening. High temps: 57-61. Overnight, the snow level falls to 5000′ or so.

A cloudy, potentially drizzly/showery day is forecast on Monday. Morning temps: uper 30s. Afternon: upper 50s. Light wind early turns westerly at 15mph in the afternoon. This sets us up for lots of rainbows. Snow level: 5000′ or so. It’s possible we’ll see continued showers on Tuesday along with stronger west wind โ€“ rainbows continue. Snow level: 4000′. Uncertain inreases from Wednesday on, but high temps stay cool, well below 60 degrees. It appears that fall is here. I’m running super late this morning, so I’ll leave you here for now. Safe travels. -TATAS
