Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! A couple days of easterlies are on tap for Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday brings a solid round of west wind. Models are hinting at the strongest wind arriving late in the day, but there should be enough daylight wind to get you on the Nch’i Wana. Westerlies likely linger west of Lyle on Friday, and given the setup, they may beat model predictions. Starting Saturday, uncertainty skyrockets, and there’s really no way to even make guesses about the Gorge wind forecast.

Tuesday’s a relatively easy prediction โ€“ offshore low pressure and inland high pressure combine for moderately strong easterlies. Iwash/Rooster Rock rises to 30mph this morning, and Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento should be close to 25mph for a few hours.

After midday, the wind fades. Iwash finishes up with 15-20mph, and Stevenson, Viento, and Home Valley finish at 15mph. Easterlies build to 5-10mph east of The Dalles this afternoon. Between the Hatch and Doug’s, the wind stays under 10mph all day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 60-81kcfs, river temp is 62.1F, and high temp forecast is 69F and partly high overcast.

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Wednesday brings another round of moderate easterlies and a chance for me to take another day off. Morning wind builds to 25mph at Iwash and 20mph at Viento, Stevenson, and Home Valley. Afternoon wind turns light westerly at Iwash Rock and drops to 10mph at Stevenson and the other east wind spots. High temp: 72F and mostly sunny.

On Thursday, an approaching weather system turns the wind onshore and northwesterly. Morning wind will be 17-20mph (ish) from Stevenson to the Hatch and potentially to Mosier. As the desert warms, we’ll see westerlies build to 19-22mph from Stevenson to Mosier. Models are all over the place on timing for stronger wind; there is potential for 26-29mph, but it’s unclear if this will happen prior to sunset. Fingers crossed!!!! High temp: 67 with decreasing clouds.

Post-frontal conditions Friday leave us with offshore high pressure and warmth in the desert for a decent setup. Westerlies should be 20mph or more between Viento and Hood River for at least part of the morning. Duration depends on how quickly high pressure builds inland. From Saturday onward, there’s way too much uncertainty to make predictions about strength or even directions, so I’ll leave this here for now. See you again early Thursday and hopefully on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

Cascade Locks rainfall through 11/3

Good morning, neighbors! Autumn’s withholding fall weather again โ€“ the most fall-like thing we’ll see in the next week or so is the potential for a widespread freeze on Saturday. Maybe. You may recall we were expecting a little rain on Thursday? That seems to have disappeared. And the strong signal for a pattern change to cooler/wetter starting next weekend? That too is fading…

Know what didn’t fade away? The cold air affecting Glenwood โ€“ this morning’s low there was 29. At some point the low must have dropped below 36 at my garden, as the basil and sweet potatoes show frost damage. Not the tomatoes. Those are still going strong!

Decidedly un-impactful weather lingers Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ll have a few high clouds all day Tuesday, which should give us a colorful sunset. Temps rise to 69 (you know what to do) in Hood River, 72 in The Dalles, 68 in Pasco, and 69 in Stevenson. East wind will be 30mph near Iwash and 25mph near Stevenson this morning. Afternoon sees the wind in those areas drop to 15-20mph while the wind in the hills and South Wasco and areas east of The Dalles rises to E 10mph.

Wednesday looks slightly less windy and a few degrees warmer and decidedly more sunny.

On Thursday, a weak weather system moves through late in the day. This gives us partly cloudy sky and breezy west wind. Expect 20mph west of The Dalles all day with much lighter wind to the east. Late in the day, or perhaps overnight, the wind will get much stronger and expand to areas east of The Dalles. Or maybe the whole system will arrive earlier (it’s possible!), and it’ll be windy all day everywhere. Rain chances with this system have dropped to near zero.

Cooler temps are forecast Friday along with a chance of frost. Many areas will be too windy for sub-freezing temps, so I’m not making any solid predictions yet. Quite a bit of uncertainty is present from Saturday on. One possible outcome is east wind, very dry air, and clear sky on Saturday morning. If that plays out, widespread frost or even a widespread freeze is possible. Beyond that: way too much uncertainty to make predictions. It’s worth noting that the possibility of a pattern chance to cool/wet has dropped from 70-80% in yesterday’s forecast to around 40% in the latest Euro ensemble run. Hmph. Well, it’ll rain eventually! And hopefully it’ll snow too! Safe travels. -TATAS
