Gorge Wind Forecast

Those of you wanting westerlies will have your chance this week – they won’t be super-strong, but we’ll definitely have a change of direction for a couple of days. Before I forget, I’m going on an out-of-town work training Monday through Wednesday, and my housesitter can’t do the forecast for me. If I happen to have time, I’ll do it. Otherwise… see you Thursday.

So, Sunday’s wind… we’ll start with light easterlies at 10-15 and almost no gradient. Just 0.02 from pdx-dls. By midday, the wind should go calm through the entire Gorge. River flow is 89,900 cfs and temp is 51 degrees.

Westerlies return on Monday. The day starts with 7-10 from Stevenson to Swell. By late morning or early afternoon, the wind picks up to 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River, possibly Moiser too. Tuesday morning starts a little stronger. We’ll have W 10-13 in the morning with temps in the upper 30’s!). Late morning westerlies pick up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier and stay there until the end of the day. It appears that easterlies will return in the 20-25 range on Wednesday and possibly Thursday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast was on winter break, but it’s back because of coastal wind… Swell forecast by NWS. Wind: north coast/central coast/south coast. Tuesday: 20-25/20-25/15-20, W 3′ @ 10. Wednesday: 10-15/10-15/30-35, W 4′ @ 12. Thursday: LTN/5-10/LTV, W 4′ @ 12.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Confession: I’m in Yakima, where it’s 15 degrees colder than the Gorge. Guessing you have a nothing to start the day there, given the temps and dewpoints. The sky will clear in the afternoon, and temps will rise from the upper 30’s to the upper 50’s. Light west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts with a partial nothing and turns sunny. Temps will be it he mid 30’s early and mid 50’s in the afternoon. Light west wind early goes easterly in the afternoon. No rainbows. Thursday starts with nothing and turns clear. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 50’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Next chance of rainbows is next Wednesday.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Road and Mountain Biking

FREEZE-THAW WARNING: overnight temps well below freezing will cause freezing and thawing of tacky dirt. Trail tread will be both muddy and extremely delicate in areas not under the canopy. Please don’t ride the trails if you see mud. You’ll do significant damage. Trail sensitivity will increase dramatically as overnight temps drop this week – please avoid Syncline, as it’s the most susceptible to daytime warming and resulting bike tire damage. Remember that the southern half of Whoopdee has been logged (is gone). Riding Underwood? No parking at the trailhead – you’ll need to drive ½ mile east of the trailhead and park there. Also, someone spotted a cougar there recently, so you may want to ride with a partner.
