Tuesday-Wednesday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather: breezy Tuesday, wet all week. Dry Halloween.

Hi friends! Mother Nature’s turn towards winter hasn’t quite turned off the wind… but it also hasn’t delivered big winter easterlies yet. Your best chance to get on the river is today, Tuesday, when desert westerlies in the mid 20s are likely. Light westerlies linger on Wednesday, moderate easterlies on Thursday, and then variable wind…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temiraโ€™s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

Thereโ€™s โ€œTemiraโ€™s Awesome Travel Advisory Serviceโ€ and โ€œValuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areasโ€ – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temiraโ€™s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ainโ€™t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. Thatโ€™s where you come in. Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Mother Nature’s turn towards winter hasn’t quite turned off the wind… but it also hasn’t delivered big winter easterlies yet. Your best chance to get on the river is today, Tuesday, when desert westerlies in the mid 20s are likely. Light westerlies linger on Wednesday, moderate easterlies on Thursday, and then variable wind for a couple of days. Take a look at the Mt. Hood snow forecast for better short-term rec news!

Tuesday’s wind forecast starts with early-morning pressure of 30.01/29.99/29.96 for onshore gradients of 0.02 and 0.03. As a cold front moves through today, high pressure builds offshore. Eastern Gorge westerlies respond. Morning wind starts in the 11-14mph range all the way from Viento to Arlington. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 14-17mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 18-22mph from Lyle to Rufus and 11-14mph east of Rufus.

Afternoon wind drops to 10-13mph between Stevenson and Doug’s thanks to intermittent rain. Between Avery and Arlington, westerlies rise to 23-26mph and linger into the evening. River flow over the last 24 hours was 59-101kcfs, river temp is 59.9F, and high temp forecast is 57 in Hood River and 60 out east.

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Another weather system swings through on Wednesday and provides lighter westerlies. Early wind will be gusty west 15-25mph from Iwash/Rooster to Stevenson and perhaps Viento (yes, WEST wind in that zone). The wind quickly dies off west of Stevenson. Areas between Stevenson and Doug’s rise to 10-13mph mid-morning before falling under 10mph in the afternoon. A short period of 18-22mph westerlies is likely from Avery to Threemile late morning into early afternoon, but that won’t last โ€“ the wind falls below 15mph in the afternoon. High temp: 52-56 degrees.

A cold start on Thursday gives us easterlies at 15-20mph at Iwash, Stevenson, Home Valley and Viento for a few hours mid-morning. Afternoon wind falls to 10mph at all those locations and stays very light or even calm to the east of the Hatch. High temp: 53-55 degrees.

Light and variable wind is likely Friday and Saturday. Enough uncertainty is present on Sunday that I won’t hazard a guess. Looking long-term, I see no sign of strong-enough westerlies, and it’s hard to tell what the easterlies might do given the limitations of the available models. So there’s where we stand for now. Have a great day on the Nch’i Wana if you get out there today!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! It’s Tuesday morning, and we’ve had some really impressive rain over the last couple of days for areas west of The Dalles. Rain keeps on keeping on through Friday. Your hopes for a dry Halloween should be fulfilled โ€“ rain isn’t forecast Saturday until late in the evening. Our volcanoes will be happy with all this rain. Why? It won’t fall as rain above 4000′ or so โ€“ it’ll fall as snow! Driving the passes? You may encounter snow and slush โ€“ plan extra time for your drive.

Looking around the Gorge on Tuesday morning, we see another wet start. A โ€œwet startโ€ is a vag*na owner’s equivalent of morning wo*d! Drizzle persists into the desert until 8am or so and lingers in South Wasco until 11am. Hood River and areas to the west see showers until 8pm or so. After that: dry for a couple hours then wet again. Someone listened to our concerns and is Making The Gorge Wet Again! Wind today: 15mph or so west of The Dalles and 25mph(ish) east of The Dalles to Threemile Canyon. High temps Tuesday: 57-61. I almost forgot about Glenwood โ€“ it’s 42 degrees this morning, just like the rest of us! Or at least close. It’s nice to have similar temperatures โ€“ makes us feel like one big community family!

Back to the rainfall totals for the last 48 hours or so: 2.32โ€ near Home Valley (WOW), 0.88โ€ in Corbett, 0.9โ€ in White Salmon, 0.14โ€ to 0.72โ€ in the Hood River Valley (rain-shadowing is a thing!), 0.5โ€ in Lyle, and 0.14โ€ in The Dalles and 0.02โ€ in Dufur (rain-shadowing is a thing there too). Centerville: 0.18โ€, 0.24โ€ in Goldendale (VOTE MATULOVICH!!!), and 0.02โ€ in the Arlington Triangle.

We’ll add more rain into Wednesday morning. Drivers to/from the metro area will encounter moderate to heavy rain late Tuesday night into Wednesday afternoon. Intermittent drizzle also extends to Biggs from 2am Wednesday into the evening and all the way past the Tri Cities in the afternoon for a few hours. Combine the drizzle with westerlies at 10-20mph for lots of rainbows. Early temps Wednesday will be 36-46 degrees. Afternoon: 52-57. Snow level: 4000′.

On Thursday morning, a little drizzle lingers west of Cascade Locks until 8am. After that: dry. It’s possible we’ll see Nothing near the Nch’i Wana early Thursday. Rest of the day: partly cloudy west of The Dalles and mostly cloudy to the east. We’ll have east wind at 15-20mph in the usual spots in the morning and 10mph in the afternoon with calm wind in the rest of the Gorge. With the free air freezing level at 3000-3500′, frost or a freeze is entirely possible for some of us Thursday morning thanks to radiational cooling and a developing inversion.

Intermittent rain returns on Friday with light wind. Snow level: 3000-3500′. Saturday, as I mentioned earlier, is dry because it’s Halloween โ€“ someone wants the kids (they have enough bad stuff to worry about) to have a dry, fun, holiday filled with CANDY CANDY CANDY!!! Rain returns Saturday night for a few hours, but Sunday looks mostly dry. The weather then turns slightly warmer and totally dry for a few days before we (probably) drop back into a rainy period. Good. November should be rainy. Safe travels. -TATAS
