Gorge Wind Forecast

For the next several days, the weather continues to alternate between brief ridging and weather systems moving through. This will keep the gusty, inconsistent, and difficult-to-predict westerlies rolling through the Gorge. For Tuesday, early gradients were .06 and .05, and there was a warm front scheduled to clip the PNW. We’ll see early westerlies at 14-17 from Viento to Swell with 5-10 everywhere else. It appears the western Gorge will stay relatively cloudy today. Result: gusty westerlies at 13-16. The Rowena to Arlington stretch stands to benefit somewhat from this setup; expect gusty 23-26 at those launches. River flow is 73,600 cfs and temp is 66 degrees.

High pressure builds in Tuesday night into Wednesday. Models tend to under-predict the wind with this setup. Let’s call it 10-13 from Viento to Swell early with 12-15 (maybe?) from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon. Try the coast on Wednesday for stronger wind.

Thursday looks like an active weather sort of day; rain moves into the western Gorge midday and sticks around through the afternoon. Westerlies respond by shifting east. Stevenson to Hood River starts at 10-13 and maybe picks up to gusty 23-16 in the afternoon. Morning westerlies east of Hood River start at 20-23. They’ll pick up to gusty 25-28 from Mosier (maybe) or Rowena to Arlington. As of right now, it appears the eastern Gorge will see 25-29 on Friday, but that’s really too far out to be predicting with this sort of active weather pattern.

Road and Mountain Biking

Logging is finished on the Whoopdee trail. The southern 1/3 of the trail is gone, but you are welcome to go up there and ride and check it out. Ronnoc trail is still open and good to go, as is the climb out. Work parties coming soon. In other news… Tack alert for all trails! 130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in the 150 area are closed for timber harvesting. Upper 8 Track is now closed due to logging. Motorized use is now permitted in Post (thanks, rain!), east side and Middle Mountain. There is a work party on the 140 Trail on Saturday – meet at 9am at Family Man.

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
