Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

We’re finally going to get some significant snowfall for Mt. Hood over the next 48 hours. That snowfall will be accompanied by very strong EAST wind (opposite of normal), which could make for some strange and unexpected snow deposits.

For Tuesday, snow is already falling on the mountain. The snow level will drop from 1500′ this morning to 500′ this afternoon and down to the surface tonight. About 0.8” water value (WV) falls during the day. With the cold temps, this should result in 9-11” of wind-damaged powder. Snowfall continues overnight. Another 0.8” WV falls, for another 9-11” of powder. Wind will be NW 5-10 this morning, rapidly turning around. By the afternoon, the mountains will be seeing SE 30+, turning to NE 35+ overnight. Given the heavy snowfall rate and the wind, it’ll be full-on blizzard conditions for driving on the passes.

Also, if you plan on doing BC skiing of some sort, remember that the opposite slops to usual will receive the wind-loading. It’s also worth noting that the forecast above is based on the GFS model. The EURO and HRRR and NAM have lower totals.

Light snowfall continues in easterly orographic, wraparound precipitation on Wednesday. The snow level will be 0′ all day, at least near Mt. Hood. Temps will be in the teens. Just an inch of two of snow will fall during the day. That’s followed by a trace after midnight. Wind will be NE 35 in the morning, N 10 in the afternoon, and E 5 after midnight.

Cloudy weather continues on Thursday and Friday with a few flurries possible. No accumulation. The snow level remains at 0′ for that 24 hour period, and mountain temps remain in the low teens. Wind will be light and variable. The next storm system is slated for the weekend, but models disagree on whether it will come close enough for significant impact.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies Tuesday morning quickly turn to widespread easterlies. Expect a quick build to 15-20 everywhere out of the east, building further to E30-35 in the afternoon. The wind picks up to E 35-40 at Rooster late in the evening, well after it’s too cold and too dark to get on the river.

Wednesday starts sub-freezing. Easterlies will be 15-20 in the morning most locations. They’ll back off in the western Gorge in the afternoon. Strong NE wind circling around a low pressure system will be present in the eastern Gorge – call it 20-30. On Tuesday, easterlies pick up to 30-35 near Rooster with temps in the 20’s. Easterlies continue all the way through the weekend with cold temps. Not good for water sports. Good for frozen waterfall viewing.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Guessing at your weather from far away, I’m thinking is probably mostly cloudy. It’ll stay that way, and pick up some rain. Rain switches to snow overnight. Roads freeze too. Temps will be near 40 all day dropping below freezing around midnight. East wind picks up through the whole Gorge. Read my TATAS for more details. Wednesday looks cloudy with occasional flurries. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and low 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks cloudy with a flurry or not. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and mid 30’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Overnight temps drop into the teens for the next two days after that.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Road and Mountain Biking

We’re heading into a period of colder weather with overnight sub-freezing temps. That means you’ll want to ride Syncline. You’ll also do major damage if you do, as the trail will thaw during the day. Please don’t. Same goes for Whoopdee and areas of Post not under the canopy. As for those higher-elevation trails, you can say goodbye. They’ll be snow-covered and gone by Wednesday.
