Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and the last 24 hours on Mt. Hood did this: snow, rain, snow. Snow will stick around for Tuesday. A mix of p-types arrives for Wednesday, then snow, then mixed precip and heavy, warm rain for Thursday and Friday. Snow returns for the weekend as a beast of a cold front drops out of Alaska, or perhaps just out of Canada; models don’t quite agree on anything other than the fact that colder weather will return. Details for Tuesday: Heavy snowfall all day on the mountain followed by clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ for the bulk of the snowfall. It’ll drop to 2500′ at the very tail end of this system. Expect 1.1” water value (WV) during the day, for 10-12” of decent-quality snow atop the “cream cheese” that’s already on the ground. Another 0.3” WV falls between sunset and 10pm or so, for a few more inches of delicious additions to the snowpack. Wind will be SW 20-40 (depending on elevation) in the morning, W 30 in the afternoon, NW 10-15 in the evening, and W 15 overnight.

Wednesday’s temps are borderline for snow or rain; up at 850mb (approximately 5000′), we’ll see 0C to 2C, right on the edge. Let’s call it a mix of wet snow and rain and snain with periods of rain possible. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 6000′ mid-morning, 5500′ in the evening, and 4500′ late before rising back to 5500′ after midnight. About 0.8” WV falls as mixed precip during the day. Call that 2-4” of very wet muck. Cascade Concrete or worse. About 0.2” WV falls as wet snow overnight, for an inch or two of accumulation. Wind will be W 15 early, WSW 30-40 mid-morning, W 35 in the afternoon, WNW 25-35 in the evening, and SW 10 after midnight.

Things start to warm up on Thursday – just you wait until you see how warm it gets Friday – as a westerly atmospheric river arrives. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 7500′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ after midnight, as the pineapple really get flowing. We’ll see about 0.5” WV during the day with an inch or so of snow early before a quick transition to rain. Overnight: 1.5”+ of rain. Wind will be SW 10 early, SW 20-30 mid-morning, and W 35-40 in the afternoon and evening.

Friday looks warm enough for an outdoor shower or tanning: the snow level will be 9000′ early and 12,000′ by the afternoon with on-slope temps nearing 50 degrees! Rain starts the day and sunshine ends it. About 0.4” rain falls in the morning before the sun arrives, giving the mountain a decent shot at rainbows. Wind will be W 40 in the morning and then will switch to WSW 40 in the afternoon and build to WSW 55 overnight. Warm weather sticks around Saturday. A powerful NW cold front arrives Saturday night bringing massive snowfall by Sunday morning, assuming nothing changes.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light and variable3 wind on Tuesday morning will turn to gusty westerlies as a front moves through midday. Expect gusty 18-22 west of Hood River and east of Hood River with a short period of wind actually right near Hood River midday. River flow is 160kcfs and temp is 39 degrees. Wednesday starts light and variable. Don’t get your hopes up for anything other than flat-water activities. The wind will go light westerly, perhaps 3-6mph, after 4pm. Thursday starts with E 20-25 and ends with E 5-10. It’s possible we’ll see a strong west wind day this weekend, but the current timing has the best of the wind happening after dark.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s snowy or muddy on all the trails now. Please leave them alone so you don’t do damage. The only exception may be the lower parts of Syncline, but they are probably muddy enough that you will do damage too. Think about gravel or road biking today, as temps should make it into the upper 40’s with just-sprinkles falling from the sky.
