Gorge Wind Forecast

Models have been consistent in predicting an extended stretch of westerlies for the Gorge. Today is no exception – the forecast for daily west wind continues in the 00Z model run. If you’re looking for the strongest wind this week, you’re probably looking at carving out some time today. Dawn Patrol wind was generally in the 14-18 range, with Viento showing the strength of the gradient. Dawn Patrol reading there: 28. I suspect you could find similar wind at Mosier for Dawn Patrol.

Give the weather a couple hours to warm up, and the wind will jump to 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus. Yes, it’s probably a good day for your downwinder, but you will be heading into a current of 279kcfs. Morning wind today will likely be of the highest quality; a week little weather thingie could kick off some instability north of the Columbia this afternoon. If that happens, expect the wind to drop between Swell and Mosier and hold near Stevenson and Avery.

Wednesday: offshore high pressure and a deep marine layer combine with sunshine and warm weather in the desert for another windy day on the river. Daybreak brings 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 in other locations. A couple hours into the day, the wind should rise to 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 12-15 in the eastern Gorge.

Thursday and Friday look a wee bit lesser – westerlies peak at 21-24 both days with the strongest wind in the central Gorge. I mentioned something yesterday or the day before about Sunday’s wind. Models are currently focusing the biggest gradients on Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Hopefully that shifts, but if not, you’ll want to plan for an early rise on Sunday.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Tuesday: LTNW/NW5-10/25-30, NW swell 5′ at 7 seconds and SW 3′ at 15 seconds. Wednesday: 10-15/20-25/30-35, SW 3′ @ 17. Thursday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, SW 3′ @ 15. Jones Tuesday: 21-24. Wednesday: 23-26. Thursday: 25-28. Sauvie’s Tuesday: 8-11. Wednesday: 12-15. Thursday: 12-15.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the bottom. Lower Lewis River is open.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
