Tuesday. It’s not hot yet. Get out there and enjoy the not-hot, windy weather!

We’re sitting at the edge of influence of an offshore low pressure system, and that’s not only sending high clouds over the PNW, it’s going to make our wind lighter than it should be and less predictable than your forecasters (me, iWind, and everyone else). That said, we have decent gradients to start: .08 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc) with .16 synoptic-scale support. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect 17-20 from Swell to Mosier this morning with upper single digits to low teens at other beaches. The wind will back off east of The Dalles during the middle part of the day while picking up to 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Doug’s will pick up to 24-27 mid to late afternoon, as will Stevenson, mostly likely. The other western Gorge locations will drop back to 17-20, and Rufus and Arlington will pick up to 15-18 late in the day. As a weather system approaches the coast this afternoon, expect the wind to become gustier and less reliable.

Tomorrow starts off with westerlies at 16-19 pretty much everywhere following the passage of a weather system in the wee hours of the day. As that weather system clears the area, we’ll see the wind pick up to 22-25 from Stevenson to Doug’s in the afternoon.

Thursday starts off with 5-10 or less as high pressure starts to build over the Northwest. We’ll see a slow and steady build to W 16-19 in the afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to Mosier.

It’s Wednesday, and that means it’s time for your long-range, totally unreliable, very likely to change weekend forecast. As of right now, models show light E Friday (I think we’ll really see light W), light E on Saturday (probably correct) and a light start with solid westerlies of some sort Sunday afternoon (IDK).

Jones and Sauvie’s Beta Test Forecast: Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow: 15-18. Sauvie’s today: 7-10. Sauvie’s tomorrow: 9-12.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: light/light/15-20, SW well 2′ @ 17 seconds. Tomorrow: 5-10/5-10/20-25, SW 2 @ 16. Thursday: 5-10/10-15/25-30, W 4 @ 9.

Random Morning Thoughts

Some people are born matchmakers, shadchanim. These folks read people, have an instinctive understanding of personality, and are able to fit folks together like puzzle pieces. Shadchanim (sing. shadchan) can match in love, in business, in friendship, and in many other venues.

My professor from last quarter is a shadchan, and so am I. I don’t doubt my ability to create connections between others, but sometimes other people do, and they try and discount or even shame me. Having my professor stand confident in her predictions gives me more confidence in mine. Matchmaking, btw, is an unusual ability.

Sometimes we perform in ways that are six-sigma, far from the average experience. That doesn’t mean our behaviors are wrong, abnormal, or pathological. They’re just unusual, and it helps to find others in the same standard deviation. Company equals confidence.

You, I am sure, do things that others would consider “abnormal”: you sleep in your car, you drive hours for wind, you find joy in playing in extreme conditions, you ride your bike for many hours on end, you work your ass off building a business. You do many things that few people around you do. And sometimes you question your normality, maybe even your sanity.

You’re okay. I promise. You’re actually extraordinary. Find someone else who shares your passions and your drive, and you can commiserate in your awesomeness. It’s okay to be awesome and different (as long as you do no harm to others). Rest confident in your awesomeness, and have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

This is the part of the forecast I was most looking forward to writing today, because it’s the most exciting! Not today. Today looks rather meh. Beautiful, but meh. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Increasing wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts in the low 50’s and sees mid 80’s in the afternoon. Increasing wind. No rainbows. High clouds are possible in the morning. Thursday sees temps in the upper 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. No rainbows.

Things get super f**king interesting by Saturday, when temps will top out in the 90’s or low triple digits. Expect temps near 100 with high humidity on Sunday and Monday for a yuck factor of 99/100 both those days and a hashtag of #swimtime. In addition, southerly flow over the region starting Saturday puts us at risk for thunderstorms Saturday through Monday. That’s bad news, considering the bone-dry condition in the forests. Five bucks says we go to Industrial Fire Protection Level III after this weekend, if not before.

Road and Mountain Biking

What’s there to say? It’s dry and dusty out on the trails, so you can practice your dirt surfing. On the roads, the fresh pavement at McCurdy Farms is still awesome. If you ride your road bike the next few mornings, you’ll find light wind, but the afternoons look windier.
