Wednesday. Heat wave’s a’coming. Make your whitewater rafting reservations now!

DSC_0973-Edit
I’m not sure if this is the windiest summer ever following the windiest winter, by far, ever, but it sure seems like we’ve had a long string of windy days. But then again, if you happen to own a foil board, every day is windy. This morning’s 6am gradients were .07 (pdx-dls), .03 (dls-psc) and .25 (eph-dls), with weak high pressure off the coast and two upper level low pressure systems off BC. This isn’t the best setup, but it’ll still be enough to get at least some of you on the water. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect 10-13 this morning from Viento to Mosier, picking up to 12-15 midday from Stevenson to Mosier. By the middle of the afternoon, as a little weather system moves through, we’ll see brief gusty 15-18 near Hood River, followed by a drop. At the same time, the wind will pick up to gusty 20-23 at Stevenson and the Rowena area, possibly at Rufus too. Arlington will join in with 15-18, and if Rufus doesn’t hit the 20’s, it’ll hit the upper teens.

Tomorrow looks like a 5-10 start from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier, likely filling in at Rowena in the late afternoon. Expect light and variable wind on Friday. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see light easterlies on Saturday and light westerlies on Sunday. It appears Sunday’s model runs are struggling with instability in the atmosphere, so at this point, anything could happen that day.

Sauvie’s n’ Jones Beta Test Forecast: Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, 20-23. Sauvie’s today, 7-10. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 11-14.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: light/light/25-30, SW swell 2′ @ 16 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/15-20/30-40, W 4′ @ 9. Friday: 20-25/25-30/15-20, W 4 @ 10.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking about something this morning… We have thoughts, and those thoughts can be unreliable, to say the least. They tell us that we “should” do this or that or that we’re this kind of person or that kind of person. Real wisdom, I think, lies in our minds, which aren’t contained in our thoughts. Our minds are contained in all the nerve cells that run through our entire bodies. To access our entire body of wisdom, we have to step into our bodies and out of our thoughts.

That raises a question for me: How do we know if our body’s wisdom is trustworthy? It sure feels like it is. But something to keep in mind is that our nervous systems are shaped by past (and current) experience. So your wisdom comes from your experience, and your experience creates automatic patterns of reaction.

For me, this wondering leads to this: be skeptical of your thoughts. Also be skeptical to a lesser extent, of your body’s wisdom. Approach, as much as you can, situations with a sense of curiosity and a willingness to react in a different way than you have before. Be aware of your patterns of thought and action, and gently question them. As an added bonus, you’ll be approaching the world with a sense of newness and curiosity, and that will make life more vibrant.

Thanks to my fellow human Ajahn Sudanto for the jumping off point for this one. =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

Here we are again with the most exciting part of the forecast! We have a few high clouds this morning, and high clouds will increase this afternoon as a couple of weak weather systems swing through and an upper level low hangs off the BC coast. Expect temps in the mid 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Increasing-to-moderate wind. No rainbows.

High pressure begins building over the PNW tomorrow, clearing the sky. Expect temps in the low 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Friday starts off clear and ends with convective clouds and a damned good chance for a colorful sunrise. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and right around 100 in the afternoon. Record high on Friday is 101 or 102… somewhere in there. Friday afternoon looks problematic in the Cascades, with a chance of dry thunderstorms.

Now, I don’t want to be Debbie Downer, but… It’s hard for me to find a positive reframe for the weather this weekend. Perhaps we all need to go whitewater rafting?

Saturday looks hot and muggy with temps topping out many degrees above 100 – the current forecast is 107. I’d even venture to say that Saturday looks nasty, disgusting and gross. Ew. Yuck. There may be thunderstorms Saturday afternoon.

The 100+ degree weather and humidity continues on Sunday and Monday with increasing chances of thunder. But hey… if it’s cloudy, it’ll only be in the 90’s with high humidity. Ew.

Road and Mountain Biking

There was something I really wanted to tell you guys about today. Oh, I know what it was. It’s the Portland World Naked Bike Ride, happening this Saturday at 8:55pm, leaving from Colonel Summer Park in Portland. I would like to point out that Saturday is forecast to be over 100 degrees, meaning this is THE year to do the ride. You’ll be toasty as a slice of toast in a toaster oven. No need to say, “It’s cold out here,” or anything along those lines. Just show up with your beautiful naked body (all bodies are beautiful), and ride your bike around town with 10,000 of your best friends.

Other than that, the trails are dusty, and there’s fresh blacktop on McCurdy Farms Hill and near the Mt. Hood Country (no longer a) Store.
