Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a wee bit on the smoky side this morning, and there’s no escaping from it even on the river. If playing in the river is your plan, you’ll find just enough east wind today to make it happen. Wednesday’s wind is all about Mother Nature’s timing, and Thursday’s look just plain windy.

For Tuesday, we start with easterlies at 15-20 from Rooster to Stevenson with 10-15 from Home Valley to Viento. Add 5mph to those speeds for the midday max. After 2pm, the wind will quickly fade to E 5-10 by 5pm.

A brief rebound in the easterlies on Wednesday morning gives us 10-15 between Rooster Rock and Stevenson. After 11am, we’ll see a switch to light westerlies, fist at Stevenson, and then slowly filling in to Hood River. It’s hard to say exactly how much wind we’ll see before dark; for now, let’s call it 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 5pm, continuing to build overnight.

Thursday starts with Dawn Patrol at 21-24+ from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 east of the there. Models like the idea of 27-31 between Stevenson and Arlington in the afternoon. I would not be surprised to see stronger periods. Looking at the weekend, marine clouds fill the west, but the westerlies continue in the mid to upper 20’s. I’d give more detail, but the models have been bouncing around from run to run. Suffice it to say that the air will be cleaner, the temps will be lower, and the wind will be blowing.

BONUS: Jones Tuesday: nope. Wednesday: 25-28. Thursday: 11-14. Sauvie’s Tuesday: nope. Wednesday: 16-19. Thursday: 13-16. Coast (north/central/south). Tuesday: 15-20/15-20/nope, NW swell 4′ @ 8 seconds. Wednesday: W5/X/X, NW 3′ @ 7 and W 3′ @ 11. Thursday: NW5/NW5, N25-30, NW 4′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the cool things about being a therapist is that, no matter what kind of day I’m having, I always feel better after helping my clients. There’s all sorts of wisdom that can be mined from this, but one of the main takeaways is that kindness and generosity and presence feels good.

Even if you are not a therapist, you can take advantage of this. Sure, there are times where it’s really, really hard to muster up some generosity or to hold space for others. But you can make yourself feel better in those times by performing a random act of kindness and noting the effect it has on the recipient.

You don’t even have to involve anyone you know. You can pay someone’s bridge toll, buy coffee for the person behind you, give something to one of the folks on the off-ramp, help out an elderly neighbor, bake cookies for someone, or even pick up trash along your favorite stretch of road. These things won’t make you feel worse (especially fresh-baked cookies). They’ll likely make you feel better. Try it out. May you be at peace. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s grossly smoky this morning, with an AQI of 177 in Hood River. That’s considered unhealthy for everyone. In theory, as upper flow shifts to the NE from the N today, the AQI should improve a bit. Anyway, temps will be in the low 60’s early and mid 80’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks smoky and hot, potentially becoming less smoky in the evening as upper flow switches to the NW. Temps will be near 60 early and in the low 90’s later. East wind early, west wind in the afternoon. No rainbows. Thursday looks much nicer: strong westerly surface flow combines with WSW upper flow to start moving out the smoke. Temps will be near 60 early and near 80 in the afternoon. Strong west wind. No rainbows. Next chance of rainbows is Sunday, when the high temp will struggle to reach 70!

Upcoming Events

With the air quality this bad, exercising outside isn’t going to be the best plan today. If you want an indoor activity to escape the smoke today, there are a few: there’s moving meditation at 6:15 this morning at Trinity Natural Medicine, and a group mindfulness practice with the Pacific Hermitage monks at 6:30 this evening at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a free yoga class at 5:30 at HAVEN in The Dalles, and there’s a group triathlon practice at West Mayer Park at 6.

The Wasco County Fair and Rodeo kicks off tomorrow, and the Volcanic Enduro Mountain Bike Race is in Bend on Saturday. Closer to home, we have lots of outdoor movies: Ferdinand Friday evening at Cascade Locks Marine Park, Moana Saturday evening at Kramer Field in The Dalles, and The Lego Batman Movie at Jackson Park Saturday night.
