Gorge Wind Forecast

An upper level low over Oregon will move eastward today as another system drops down from British Columbia. Once again, we have model disagreement on wind strength. Things are more clear on Tuesday, as models agree on easterly flow. Timing will be everything on Wednesday. After that, we experience a big pattern change with a return to seasonal temps (that’s 70’s and 80’s, not 90’s and 100’s!) and stronger westerlies.

For Monday, expect a smoky day on the river and everywhere else. Early morning gradients of .06 and .02 hint at moderate westerlies for the day. The GFS likes the idea of basically no wind, but it’s been way off the mark the last few days. The Euro likes a slow build to 14-17 this afternoon between Stevenson and Mosier. Let’s go with that. River flow is 107kcfs and temps is 70 degrees.

Models agree on east wind Tuesday as a heat low builds along the west side of the state. Let’s call it 15-20 between Stevenson and Viento and E 20-25 between Rooster Rock and Dalton Point. The wind will fade in the afternoon, leaving us with light easterlies after 2pm.

Wednesday starts with light east wind at 10mph or less and quickly switches to light west wind at 5-10 between Stevenson and Viento. Timing is everything: the current forecast has 13-16 mid afternoon and 22-25 late afternoon between Stevenson and The Dalles, filling in to Rufus late. Additional detail: upper flow turns NW Wednesday afternoon, starting to clear out the smoke.

Looking long-range, models agree on cooler weather through the weekend. Marine clouds in Portland and sunshine in the desert set up 27-31 Thursday and Friday and moderate to strong westerlies over the weekend too. Best part? 70 degrees for a high on Sunday!

BONUS: Jones Monday: nope. Tuesday: nada. Wednesday: 24-28. Sauvie’s Monday: 11-14. Tuesday: nope. Wednesday: 10-13. Coast (north/central/south). Monday: 5/10-15/25-30, NW swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Tuesday: 15-20/15-20/15-20, NW 4′ @ 8 and W 3′ @ 12. Wednesday: no/no/nothing, NW 4′ @ 7 and W 3′ @ 11. Surfing, anyone?

Gorge Weather Forecast

Today’s smoke is even yuckier than yesterday’s smoke, and it won’t go away until Wednesday evening. One nice thing: that’ll keep the temps down below where they “should” be. For Monday, we’ll have mid 60’s early and low 90’s later. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Slight chance of thunder this evening. Tuesday looks smoky. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and low 90’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Thunder in the eastern Gorge. Wednesday looks smoky turning clear overnight. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and mid 90’s later. Light west wind until the evening, when the wind will pick up. No rainbows. Clear sky and 80 degrees Thursday!
