Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and we still have light easterlies at 10-15 or so. Over the next 48 hours, we’ll see a dramatic change in the weather. Wind will switch to strong westerlies, and temps will drop 20 degrees. We might even see some rain this weekend!

For Wednesday, the early morning easterlies will blow at 10-15 or so. By midday, there will be zero wind at all. Take advantage of it, because that’s a situation that won’t return for several days, at least. West wind returns mid-afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front, and also in response to the heat low shifting east of the Cascades. We’ll have 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River around 2pm. Westerlies continue to build through the afternoon, giving us 21-24 or so around sunset from Stevenson to The Dalles.

A big bad marine push results from Thursday’s cold front. This drops high temps about 15 degrees from Wednesday and sets up a big cross-Cascade gradients. Cold fronts, sadly, are not ideal for steady, reliable west wind. Models predict 21-24 from Viento to The Dalles Thursday morning with 13-16 out east. By midday, they’re calling for 27-31 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 22-25 out east. It’s likely that the wind will be less reliable and more up-and-down than those numbers indicate. Additionally, this setup is prone to giving us a couple hours of good wind near swell with longer-lasting wind at Stevenson (if it doesn’t stay cloudy), Hood River, Doug’s, and Avery.

Another weak disturbance moves through Friday morning, dragging low clouds all the way to Hood River and beyond. This shifts the Dawn Patrol (21-24) to Mosier-to-the-Dalles. Afternoon westerlies look like 27-31 from Swell to Rufus as clouds burn back. 20-23 farther east. Models disagree on Saturday. The GFS likes 25-28 and the ECMWF likes 30-35. Sunday may see some rain, but models still like the idea of mid-20’s. That depends on the amount and extent of rain, a prediction on which the models disagree. At this point, I’d happily trade wind for rain…

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 24-28. Thursday: 13-16. Friday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: 15-18. Friday: 8-11. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: W5/W5/S5, W swell 3′ at 10 seconds. Thursday: 5-10/5-10/25-30, NW 4′ @ 7. Friday: 5/5-10/25-30+, NW 5′ @ 9.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the cool things about being a therapist is that, no matter what kind of day I’m having, I always feel better after helping my clients. There’s all sorts of wisdom that can be mined from this, but one of the main takeaways is that kindness and generosity and presence feels good.

Even if you are not a therapist, you can take advantage of this. Sure, there are times where it’s really, really hard to muster up some generosity or to hold space for others. But you can make yourself feel better in those times by performing a random act of kindness and noting the effect it has on the recipient.

You don’t even have to involve anyone you know. You can pay someone’s bridge toll, buy coffee for the person behind you, give something to one of the folks on the off-ramp, help out an elderly neighbor, bake cookies for someone, or even pick up trash along your favorite stretch of road. These things won’t make you feel worse (especially fresh-baked cookies). They’ll likely make you feel better. Try it out. May you be at peace. Have an awesome day.
