Models have been all over the place with what the wind is going to do today, and yesterday’s runs looked a lot better than today’s Oh well. It’s weather forecasting. What can you do? As of dawn this morning, the Dawn Patrol was driven by .06 (pdx-dls) and .14 (dls-psc) with westerlies in the mid-twenties from Maryhill to Arlington. In the western Gorge, under the marine layer, the clouds were keeping the wind in the 13-16 range. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

High pressure off the coast this morning will keep the eastern Gorge in the 24-28 range until midday, when the wind will back off. Expect 13-16 pretty much everywhere this afternoon. Yeah, I’m surprised about that too – I thought we’d see stronger wind today, but the next low pressure system is approaching faster than expected.

Looking at Wednesday, we’ll start off with dawn wind in the 10-13 range as low pressure off the coast impacts our gradients. Then again, it’s possible the larger synoptic-scale gradients could overpower that, giving us a bit more than expect. Models currently suggest 10-13 early, 20-23 mid-morning, and 24-27 in the afternoon. The strongest, steadiest wind will likely be from Mosier to Rufus in the afternoon, but if the clouds burn back enough, we’ll see the wind fill in from Stevenson to Hood River as well.

An upper level low settles in off the coast on Thursday, setting up a cloudy, showery day in the western Gorge. So, expect 7-10 in the western Gorge early and 13-16 in the eastern Gorge early. As the low shifts a little ways into BC and high pressure builds offshore, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 23-26, maybe a bit more, in the afternoon. Friday currently looks like 24-28.

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

There’s an underlying assumption based on everything I say here. That assumption is that change is possible. Many people don’t believe this, because they haven’t experienced other people changing. A second piece plays into this: our expectations.

Our minds create images of people based on our past experiences with those people (and our life’s experiences with others who are similar in some way to those people). Unless we direct our awareness towards these expectations, we won’t experience the change that people have worked hard to create. And we will discount our ability to make changes in ourselves.

Let me assure you that people do change. They change in small ways, and they change in fundamental ways. They even change their expectations of other people and how they interact with others. Yes, really, it’s true. In order to experience this, you have to change your expectations – you have to see people anew each time you meet them. Why? Because not only is change possible, it often happens in life-shifting moments of insight.

The person you had coffee with last week may not be the same person this week. Approach your fellow humans with curiosity and openness (but still keep yourself safe, of course), and you might be delighted and surprised at what you find both in others and yourself. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

I haven’t been mountain biking in a couple of days because PSU has stolen my soul. Maybe this afternoon? Anyway, you should find mixed dirt out there. We are expecting some rain on Thursday, and that should make the dirt awesome again. In road biking news, you’ll find decent conditions in the morning and windy afternoon for the next three days.

Tomorrow starts off with a free yoga class at the Heartgate Sanctuary at 8:30, followed by ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5. Dirty Fingers hosts a women’s mountain bike ride at 5:30 every Wednesday, and if you complete that ride, they’ll give you a glass of pinot.
