Monday. Happy Summer, everyone!

DSC_2168
As you can see from the interesting cloud formations above the Gorge this morning, there’s some complicated stuff (technical weather term there) going on above our heads. The irritating upper level low that’s been off the coast for the last however-many days is finally starting to move eastward. As of early morning today, it was right off the coast, but it will move inland, at least a bit today. That will do a couple of things – keep the gradients slack this morning and bump them up this afternoon, while causing the wind to be on the gusty side. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect light and variable wind this morning under the influence of a .02 (pdx-dls) E gradient. As the low shifts further inland, we’ll see the wind turn to the west. By 2pm, we’ll have gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. The wind will pick up to 22-25 mid-afternoon from Stevenson to Maryhill (likely dropping to gusty 16-19 from Viento to Hood River) and pick up to 24-28 after 5pm at Stevenson, Avery, Rowena and possibly the Rufus section of river.

The ULL should be inland Tuesday, and that’ll drive a deep marine push into the western half of Cascadia (because I’m too lazy to type “Oregon and Washington” and also enjoy being provocative on occasion). Models hint at the marine clouds pushing past Hood River. If that’s the case, we’ll start off the day with W 22-25 or a touch more from Mosier to Arlington. If that’s not the case, look for Dawn Patrol at the Hatchery and White Salmon Sandbar.

In an interesting twist, the models aren’t predicting the wind to build much over the day, but I’m going to give the numbers a bit of a nudge. Expect the wind to back off way-out-east and pick up to 24-28 from Mosier to Rufus by late morning, holding through afternoon. If the clouds burn back, the Corridor (Viento to Hood River) will join in the fun too.

Wednesday sees weak high pressure over the region followed by an approaching cold front in the evening. With that setup, we should start off the day with 16-19 near Hood River, rising to gusty 24-27 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Maryhill. Models are rather scatterbrained (like me) for the rest of the week, but they’re currently predicting 24-28 Thursday and 23-26 on Friday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is the beginning of Hell Month for me at school, with four days of classes over a night-morning, night-morning schedule. That, as you may have guessed, is going to make forecasting daily a bit tricky for me. I’ll do my best, and we’ll make it work, and it’ll be over in four weeks, thank goodness!

This packed schedule is also going to make it difficult for me to get out and play in Nature as much as I’d like. That means I’m giving you an assignment for the next four weeks: while I’m pedaling away on the trainer bike doing my piles of reading, you have to spend extra time out in Nature for me. That’s an order – all of you must play more in the next month to make up for my lack of free time.

It’s a rough job, I know, but I think you’re up to it. And by the way, it’s the Solstice today. It’s the lightest day of the year (not the longest – each day is still 24 hours, ha!). It’s your best chance to be #GorgeNormal and get every one of your favorite activities into one day. Enjoy all the daylight, and have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Today started off somewhere between partly and mostly cloudy, and we’ll probably see it stay that way today with the tiniest chance of a few scattered raindrops. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 70’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. .04% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks partly cloudy to start with a few higher-elevation sprinkles. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong wind. 37% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny to start and partly cloudy in the evening. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Looks like an awesome morning for road biking out there: partly cloudy sky and no wind at all. You’ll have the first half of the day to enjoy breeze-free riding, and then we’ll have westerlies for the rest of the week. Trails: good, of course, and open except for Gunsight and perhaps Boulder Lakes.

Upcoming Events

For today, there’s free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm, community meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon, pickup Kickball (yes, for real!) at Bingen’s Daubenspeck Park at 6, community yoga at Samadhi at 6, Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine at 6, Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.

This weekend is the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association’s Beach Bash. It starts off with a concert at the Waterfront Park on Friday night (okay, actually, there’s a party at Stonehedge Gardens Thursday night) then the action moves to Hood River’s Event Site. There will be free windsurfing and SUP lessons and clinics and low cost demos. On Saturday in The Dalles, Thompson Park Skate Park is hosting a BMX, Scooter and skate contest.

Have an awesome day today!
