Wednesday. Lots of wind and weather in this forecast.

DSC_1807-Pano
Today, Wednesday, started off with a nice breeze through the entire Gorge and a .08 (pdx-dls) gradient driving those moving air molecules. A couple of things are happening today: first, there’s high pressure off the southern Oregon coast, and that will be joined by an upper level low off the Washington coast later. Next, there’s a weak frontal system moving in this afternoon. As you may know, all this stuff moving around doesn’t make for steady, reliable wind. That said, we will have wind today. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect morning wind in the 17-21 range from Viento to Swell with upper teens from Bingen to Doug’s and 10-13 elsewhere. We’ll see the wind hang out in those ranges until the afternoon, when the approaching front will start to have more of an impact. That should give us 22-25 from Stevenson to Rowena (probably at Rufus late in the day). However, the wind near Swell will likely last only for an hour or two before dropping off to 16-19. So, be quick and proactive.

Tomorrow sees low pressure over the region with deep marine clouds and showers in the western Gorge. As the low starts to move inland, we’ll be more under the influence of Pacific high pressure in the afternoon, leading to stronger wind. So, expect 10-13 in the rainy western Gorge in the morning with 15-18 east of Bingen to start the day. In the afternoon, we’ll see gusty 12-15 under the clouds with 23-26 east of the clouds, likely from Mosier to Arlington, but possibly only further east than Mosier.

Looking at Friday, the low continues to move inland, leaving us more under the influence of the coast high. Models suggest 15-18 east of The Dalles to start the day with 25-29 in the afternoon from Mosier to Arlington. I wouldn’t be surprised, given the setup, if we beat the models.

Long range models are predicting a strong high pressure in the Pacific for the weekend. Models currently say no wind in the Gorge on Saturday, but I think we’re more likely to see 13-16. So… let’s see what the models say tonight, tomorrow, and the next day. Models do think we’ll see light and variable wind Sunday morning with 13-16 in the afternoon. Again, we wait and see.

Road and Mountain Biking

The trails are all still there, with the only trails not yet open being Gunsight and Boulder Lakes, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the latter is open and the former is just covered in downed trees, not snow. You’ll have to go check it out, because I don’t have time. In road biking land, it’s going to be quite windy over the next several days.
