Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

There’s a big change in the weather coming for Mt. Hood for the rest of the week – we’ll transition from sunshine on Tuesday to snow on Wednesday to rain, courtesy of the Pineapple Express, Thursday and Friday. Before that rain falls, there will be a nice round of storm skiing Wednesday and Wednesday night, just in time for the opening of night skiing at Meadows. It is worth noting that this could be worse – this atmospheric river will have a snow level around 6500′. We often see this pattern with 8000′-10,000′ snow levels. At least we’ll be accumulating some snow up high!

For Tuesday, expect a sunny morning on the mountain. Clouds move in midday and stick around overnight. Temps will be all over the place – the free air freezing level will be 6500′, but temps below that will be in the 20’s. Wind will be SW 15-20 all day long with 30-35 up high.

Wednesday starts off cloudy. Models are all over the place on when snow will arrive – the GFS is running almost twelve hours earlier than the Euro. Either way, the snow level will be 5000′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, briefly 5500′ overnight, and 3500′ after midnight. Given the uncertainty in timing, let’s call it a mid-afternoon start to the snow. We should see 0.2-0.3” water value (WV) before sunset, for a couple inches of new snow. Overnight, an additional 0.8”-1.0” WV falls. Temps will fluctuate during this time period, and there may be a few hours of mixed precip or very wet snow. So, let’s call it 6-8” of dense new snowfall overnight. Wind Wednesday will be SSW 20-25 during the day, WSW 30-40+ in the afternoon and evening, and WSW 20 after midnight.

The snow level quickly rises on Thursday morning as the Pineapple Express moves into the Pacific Northwest. The exact location of the heaviest precipitation can be notoriously difficult to pinpoint in advance; that said, models are suggesting the Willy Valley and the Coast Range will take the brunt of this one. Even so… The snow level starts at 3500′ Thursday morning and rises to 6500′ as 5000′ temps climb to 4-6C. Temps drop back down to 2-4C overnight, for a snow level of 6000′ or so. During the day, up to 2.0” WV falls on Mt. Hood, starting as snow and then switching to rain. Another 0.3” WV of rain falls overnight. This will be accompanied by very strong SW wind: WSW 20 early rises to SW 50+ in the afternoon, building to SW 70+ overnight. Wind below tree line will be about half that, but gusts to 100mph seem possible on exposed ridges at the highest resort elevations.

Moving on to Friday, rain continues. The snow level will be 6000′-6500′ most of the day, briefly dropping to 5000′-5500′ in the afternoon for a brief and transient period of snow. About 0.5” WV falls during the day. Rain tapers off in the evening for just another 0.1” WV. Wind will be SW 70+ early up high (half that down low), and will slowly drop to SW 30-40.

It appears the snow level will drop on Saturday, landing in the 4000′-4500′ range. About 3-4” of snow is currently forecast to fall during the day along with SW wind in the 30-40 range. Models start to disagree after this, but there’s no indication of a return to the Pineapple Express next week. Thank goodness!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Very strong easterlies Tuesday morning start at 50-55mph near Rooster and 25-30 near Stevenson and 20-25 near Viento . The wind will slowly back off to 35-45 near Rooster this afternoon. River flow is 103kcfs and temp is 44 degrees. Wednesday starts with E 20-25 from Rooster to Viento. The wind turns to light westerly near Rooster in the afternoon and holds at 10-15 near Stevenson and Viento. Thursday brings another round of light easterlies: 5-10 at Stevenson all day long. It appears the wind will be calm in the central Gorge on Friday as heavy rain falls.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Road and Mountain Biking

I saw a Sprinter Van returning from Syncline yesterday with three muddy bikes on the back. Freeze-thaw conditions exist there right now, so please don’t ride there or you’ll do significant trail damage. Same goes for Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Post. It’s muddy, unless you’re under the canopy. Please don’t. Go ride your gravel bike or do something else, and leave the trails be for now!
