Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Fall weather sticks around through the weekend, but the wind only stays here through Friday. Temps dip from the mid 70’s on Thursday into the 60’s on Friday, so pack something warmer than board shorts and a sun shirt! Plan for a session west of The Dalles on Thursday. On Friday, you’ll be driving east of Mosier for the best results.

Looking at Thursday, we have deep marine clouds on the west side and some high clouds associated with an approaching offshore system. That system includes a cold front approaching from the NW; it will make the wind up-and-down today. We start with pressures of 30.03/29.99/29.96 for gradients of .04/.03. Westerlies are generally in the 5-10 range to start the day with 14-17 at Viento. Late morning wind picks up to 17-21 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 from Lyle to Rufus. A little nudge from that approaching system combines with desert warmth this afternoon for gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16 at Rufus. East of Rufus, the wind remains less than 10mph. River flow readings are 63-83kcfs, river temp is 68F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 74F.

Friday is going to be cooler, cloudier, and windier as a cold front swings through and offshore high pressure briefly takes hold. The day starts with 20-23 from Viento (which will probably overperform) to Threemile. Marine clouds are forecast to hold all day in Hood River, so drive east for the steadiest, strongest wind. Models suggest 24-27 from Lyle to Threemile from late morning on. Mosier is a maybe. Areas west of Mosier fall from 20-23 to 12-15 as the day proceeds. High temp Hood River: 67F. Arlington: 71F.

A trough settles over the PNW on Saturday, and a low transits southward through the offshore waters. Trust me when I say that this is far from ideal! Indeed, the wind forecast reflects that. The day starts light and variable. A late afternoon nudge takes the wind to 11-14ish from Mosier to Rufus. Don’t count on it; there will also be showers present. High temp: 64F. Sunday looks perfectly light and variable with a high temp in the upper 60’s. Have a great day on the river!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
