Gorge Wind Forecast
In the “good news” department, it looks like westerlies will stick around through at least the first half of next week’s upcoming heat wave. Bad news: it’s going to be quite hot – temps will be near or above 100 degrees starting next Monday and holding all week. Other news: I have the opportunity to jump on a meditation retreat starting tomorrow and running through next Wednesday. This is one of those “put your mask on first” cases – I gotta take care of me. So… I might attempt an abbreviated forecast of some sort while I’m there, but I will probably be unable to. Appreciate your understanding!
So, let’s look at Thursday. We have gradients of… 30.06-29.97 (.09) pdx-dls and another 0.03 out east. An incoming system today will disturb our low-level stability just a bit, just enough to make the wind a bit gusty and unreliable. It’s a pretty typical start: mid teens from Viento to Swell with 5-10 most other places. By mid-morning, you’ll have 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier with 7-10 out east. The disruption becomes apparent early afternoon when the wind picks up to gusty 20-23 from Hood River to The Dalles with gusty 17-21 from Viento to Swell and 20-23 at Stevenson. Downwinding? Expect some inconsistency along the route. Afternoon and evening wind picks up to gusty 23-26 from Hood River (maybe?) to Rufus, but more likely Mosier to Rufus with 17-21 from Viento to Hood River and 20-23 at Stevenson. Arlington: 18-22. High temp today: 89F. Only one river flow sensor (the least reliable, and typically the lowest number of the bunch) is reporting this morning: 164kcfs. River temp: 66F.
A deep marine push sets up on Friday morning. Sounding model says… clouds all the way to Hood River! This pushes your best Dawn Patrol to Mosier, but we still could see gusty 25-29 from Viento to Mosier right off the bat. Stevenson starts cloudy with 13-16, and areas east of Mosier, all the way to Arlington, start with 18-22. Midday wind climbs to 27-32 from Viento to Doug’s with 24-27 at Stevenson, 18-22 at Rufus, and 12-15 at Arlington. That’s prime time. Models suggest the wind will fall to 23-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 18-22 at Rufus and 10-13 at Arlington late afternoon, holding through evening. Given the setup, Rufus is likely to overperform. High temp: 81F. Perfectly pleasant day!
Saturday starts with 22-25 from Viento to Mosier and climbs to 24-27 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Out east: 10-13. High temp: 85F. High temps climb into the 90’s on Sunday, but westerlies are forecast at 19-23. Monday: 100ish and 19-23. Tuesday: 100+ and 14-17, only because the desert will be well above 100F. Hot weather continues through the rest of the week. Wind? Uncertain for now!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! It’s a busy week for sailboat racing in Cascade Locks: the Optimist Nationals are happening. The Gorge Paddle Challenge runs Friday through Sunday in Hood River.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain is clear. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
