Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Thursday morning, and the marine clouds are about where they were yesterday morning. So are the gradients – .14 and .07 – and so is the wind. Keep in mind that today is the Gorge Downwind Champs race from Home Valley to Hood River. Race start time is between noon and 1pm. Shortly thereafter, you can expect “hundreds and hundreds” of outriggers, SUPs, and surfskis to come flying downwind. Keep your eyes upwind today, and yield to the racers.

We’re starting with 16-19 at Stevenson, 22-26 from Viento to Rufus, and 10-13 way out east. As the marine clouds burn back and a trough arrives from the north, we’ll see the wind pick up to 26-29 from Viento (maybe Home Valley, depending on the clouds) to Celilo late morning. Stevenson will join in once its clouds are gone. Models predict less wind east of Celilo in the morning – 18-22 is the call from the Deschutes River out to Arlington. Rufus should join in this afternoon with 26-29. Arlington stays at 18-22. As this trough moves in today, there’s a chance it will negatively impact the wind near Swell, making it up and down. Just go somewhere else if that happens.

Friday also looks windy, starting off with 20-23 from Viento to Mosier. Late morning wind builds to 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles with W 5-10 east of The Dalles (helpful for the Substation Fire). Saturday’s looking like 13-16 ealry and 17-20 in the afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to The Dalles. Models are consistently predicting light and variable wind on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean it’ll happen. There’s still an off chance we’ll see light westerlies of some sort, but we’ll have to wait until we’re closer to see.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: 20-23. Friday: 22-25. Saturday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Thursday: 12-15. Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 12-15. Coast (north/central/south). Thrusday: 15-20/25-30/30+, NW swell 3′ at 9 seconds. Friday: 20-25/25-30/30+, W 5′ @ 7. Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30+, W 5′ @ 8.
