Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue for about three more days before high pressure brings wickedly warm air next week and all but shuts down the westerlies. But don’t worry about that right now – we have three more days of westerlies for you, including a big day!

For Thursday, low pressure over the area will send wee little weather systems through, complicating and obfuscating the wind forecast. Best guesses for today: morning westerlies at gusty 10-15 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Light showers and additional low clouds move into the western Gorge this afternoon, keeping the wind in the 12-15 range. Farther east, from Mosier to Arlington, the wind picks up to unsteady 24-27ish. River flow is 287kcfs and river temp is 60 degrees.

Friday looks cloudy with rain in the western Gorge all day. It’s worth noting that the high temp will only be in the upper 50’s in Hood River on Friday, so you’ll want to wetsuit accordingly. Morning westerlies will be 5-10 in the west and 13-16 east of Mosier. As the desert warms and high pressure builds offshore in the afternoon, westerlies go bananas. You’ll find 28-32 with stronger gusts from Rowena all the way to Boardman.

High pressure starts to build inland on Saturday during the day. Morning wind starts with 10-13 in the cloudy western Gorge and 13-16 in the sunny eastern Gorge. Wind east of The Dalles backs off during the day to 5-10 or so. For the rest of the Gorge… 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 12-15 near Rowena in the afternoon. Current forecast for Sunday is east wind at 10-15.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Thursday: W10/W5/NW10, W swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Friday: W15-20/W5-10/N25-30, W 7′ @ 8. Saturday: 5-10/25-30/35-40, W 5′ @ 8. Central coast stays windy Sunday. Jones Thursday: gusty 10-13. Friday: 5-8. Saturday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Thursday: nope. Friday: no, again. Saturday: 5-8+.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post is open with ball bearings. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are open, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
