Gorge Wind Forecast

Cooler fall mornings have arrived, and with them comes later starts to the westerlies. Along with the change in seasons, we’ll have one weather system after another swinging through the area over the next five days or so.

For Thursday, a low pressure trough moves off to the east and a warm front approaches from the coast. While all that’s happening, offshore high pressure will just hang out. Early gradients of .04 and .02 increase during the day. Westerlies start at 8-11 most places and rise to 20-23 by noon from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles.

Friday sees a weak weather system swing through the PNW early. Morning clouds accompany early westerlies at gusty 14-17 from Viento to Doug’s. Afternoon wind likely holds at 14-17 in the west and picks up to gusty 25=28 from Mosier to Arlington.

Saturday sees brief high pressure build over the area. Westerlies starts at 5-8 and picks up to 8-12, strongest between Stevenson and Hood River. Sunday brings a strong, wet weather system into the area. The wind starts light and variable. If you can stay ahead of the rain, to the east of it, you’ll likely find gusty 25-28 in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Brown pow is HERE! Tack alert for all trails! 130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in the 150 area are closed for timber harvesting. Upper 8 Track is now closed due to logging. Motorized use is now permitted in Post (thanks, rain!), east side and Middle Mountain.

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
