Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a snowy and windy start to Thursday on Mt. Hood. Fortunately for people jonesing for fresh snow, the wind will back off this afternoon. One thing to keep in mind for you Meadows riders: giant avalanches have Heather Canyon closed through at least this weekend. Why? More snow in the forecast means a high chance of more avalanches.

Weather for Thursday: snowy. Period. The snow level will be 3000′ early and 4000′ from the afternoon on through the night. About 0.4” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 4-5” new snow. Another 0.6” WV falls overnight. With NW flow at that time, we could actually see 6-8” of snow tonight. Wind: WNW 25 early, WNW 20 in the afternoon, NW 20 overnight.

Friday brings orographic snowfall for much of the day with clear sky or partly cloudy sky possible in the afternoon. The snow level will be 4000′. Temps will warm overnight as a (duh) warmer system approaches. No significant snow accumulation is forecast for Friday – just a trace during the day and a trace overnight. Wind will be NW 20ish all day and all night.

Saturday starts with high clouds and turns snowy by 11am. I’ll qualify that “snowy” – models disagree on the upper air temps. We could actually see rotating rain and snow for the entire period of precipitation. Snow level: 4000′-7000′ during the day, depending on how things play out. The snow level will drop to 5000′ around 5pm and 1500′-2000′ after midnight. Precip: 0.4” WV during the day, for up to a couple inches of wet snow. Another 0.4” WV falls in the evening, for 3-4” new snow. Wind: NW 20 early, WSW 25 midday, WSW 35 in the evening, and W 30 overnight.

Sunday brings clouds and flurries. The snow level will be near 2000′ for the 24 hour period. About an inch of snow is forecast during the day with another inch or so overnight. Wind: W 30 early, W 15 in the afternoon, SW 10 after midnight. This weekend is the last for Skibowl and Summit this year. Summit is free Saturday and Sunday if you bring two cans of food. Skibowl is free Sunday, no strings attached, but they would appreciate if you’d bring canned food too.

Gorge Wind

westerly flow continues for the next several days in the Gorge. A series of fronts ensures the wind will be gusty. River flow is way up – 368kcfs. River temp: 47 degrees. Forecast for Thursday: a cold front moves across the Northwest driven by westerly flow. Gusty morning westerlies at 5-10 in the weak spots and 15-20 east of The Dalles pick up after 11am. Rain continues to fall near Stevenson and Viento all day, limiting wind quality. Expect gusty 12-15 there. Swell and Hood River and Rowena are tricky– they’ll be right at the edge of the clouds. Let’s go with 13-16ish. Farther east this afternoon, you’ll find 22-25 from The Dalles to Arlington.

Offshore high pressure Friday morning combines with inland low pressure for steady 10-13 to start. Were it to stay that way, we’d have a solid afternoon. However, a front will approach from the NW, making the wind gusty. In the afternoon, you’ll find 10-13 in the showery western Gorge (Stevenson to Hood River) with gusty 22-27 from Mosier to Arlington. Moving on to Saturday, we find another weather system, this one stronger than Friday’s. Result: gusty westerlies at 13-16 through the entire Gorge with plenty of rain to the west of Hood River. Sunday: 15-18ish with less rain. Details to be determined as we get closer to Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION #1: HRATS work party on Whoopdee at 9:30am on Saturday. ATTENTION #2: the cows are out on Hospital Hill, and people have still been taking dogs on their hikes and bikes. STOP! I received an email from the Kreps asking me to remind folks that dogs are not allowed on Hospital Hill between March 20th and July 1st. Cows or no cows, dogs are not allowed. We use that land due to the generosity of the Kreps family. When you go against their wishes, 1) you’re being a selfish butthead and 2) you endanger access for others. Please, leave your dogs at home! Other news: snow-free trails include Post from Mitchell Ridge down, Whoopdee (too muddy), and Syncline. All trails will be too wet to ride starting today – if you ride muddy trails, you’ll damage them. Let them dry out, and trail volunteers can build new trails rather than fixing damage you caused. Thank you!
