Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Tuesday’s NW wind on Mt. Hood was impressive enough to shut down operations at Mt. Hood Meadows. I’m not sure what happened at Timberline and Skibowl, but goodness gracious was it windy on the volcano! Before I forget, Summit Ski Area’s last weekend for the year is this weekend. Bring two cans of food, and you ski or ride for free.

On to Wednesday’s forecast: mostly cloudy sky in the morning gives way to steady and increasing snowfall in the afternoon and overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ early and 3500′ in the afternoon and evening. About 0.3” WV falls during the day, for 2-4” of new. An astounding 1.5” WV falls overnight under WNW flow for 12-15” of new. Wind will be NW 25 early, WNW 30 in the afternoon, and WNW 35 overnight.

Winds will affect higher lifts on Thursday, but probably won’t be strong enough to cause a complete shutdown. Heavy snowfall continues all day, tapering off overnight. Snow level: 3500′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, 3000′ overnight. Wind: WNW 35 in the morning, WNW 25 in the afternoon, NW 20 overnight.

Friday looks partly to mostly cloudy with occasional orographic snowfall. The snow level will be 3000′-3500′ all day. About an inch of snow falls during the day, and another inch falls overnight. Wind: NW 20 early, NW 25 in the afternoon, W 20 overnight. Saturday is unclear – probably a rain/snow mix. The snow level drops on Sunday with another 5” of accumulation. Snowfall continues with cooler temps into Monday.

Gorge Wind

Westerlies continues… For Wednesday, we starts with gradients of .11 and .12. River flow has taken a huge jump since yesterday – it’s at 347kcfs now, the upper end for the Rufus stretch. River temp is 47 degrees. For Wednesday, rain will fall in the western Gorge. Up and down gusty westerlies at 10-16 for the west. From Rowena to Arlington, the wind will build to gusty 25-29 and hold until 5pm before fading.

Thursday: A weak weather system drops down from the northwest resulting in lighter and gustier wind. The day starts with 7-11 form Stevenson to Mosier with 12-15 out east. After 2pm, the wind picks up to 12-15 from Stevenson to Arlington. Friday sees broad high pressure to the west and weak low pressure to the east. The day starts with 7-11 from Stevenson to Mosier and 13-16 from Rowena to Arlington. Afternoon westerlies: 12-15 from Stevenson to Moiser, where we’ll have on-and-off sprinkles. 24-27 from Rowena to Rufus. 18-22 near Arlington. Saturday currently looks to max out at 10-13. There’s a swap meet at Windance on Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION #1: HRATS work party on Whoopdee at 9:30am on Saturday. ATTENTION #2: the cows are out on Hospital Hill, and people have still been taking dogs on their hikes and bikes. STOP! I received an email from the Kreps asking me to remind folks that dogs are not allowed on Hospital Hill between March 20th and July 1st. Cows or no cows, dogs are not allowed. We use that land due to the generosity of the Kreps family. When you go against their wishes, 1) you’re being a selfish butthead and 2) you endanger access for others. Please, leave your dogs at home! Other news: snow-free trails include Post from Mitchell Ridge down, Whoopdee (too muddy), and Syncline. All trails will be too wet to ride starting today – if you ride muddy trails, you’ll damage them. Let them dry out, and trail volunteers can build new trails rather than fixing damage you caused. Thank you!

Upcoming Events

For Wednesday; by-donation yoga at the FISH food bank in Hood River at 10am. There’s a community trail run in White Salmon at 5pm, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out where it starts. From 6-9pm tonight, there’s a fundraiser at Double Mountain for the Oak Grove Park. The NW trail sisters have a female-identified bike ride at Sandy Ridge (weather permitting?) on Saturday. The first HRATS trail work party happens Saturday at 9:30am at the Whoopdee trail. There’s a swap meet at Windance on Sunday. The Monster and Sea Paddle is at Hood River’s Waterfront Park Saturday and Sunday. There’s free skiing at Summit in exchange for two cans of food on Saturday and Sunday.
