Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Orographic snowfall continues on Friday morning on the mountain before a partly cloudy end to the day. More snow moves in midday Saturday (or perhaps a rain-snow mix). Intermittent snowfall is the story through Tuesday followed by dry weather next Wednesday and warming on Thursday.

For Friday, the mountain sees morning snow, a mostly cloudy afternoon, and clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. About 0.2” water value (WV) falls during the day, for a couple inches of new snow. A trace may or may not fall overnight. Wind: NW 20 early, NW 15 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Saturday starts out clear and quickly turns high overcast. If the timing is just right, a beautiful sunrise will result. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 6000′ mid-morning, and will likely bounce around during the day (and the precip) before dropping to 1500′ after midnight. Precip: 0.2” WV between 11am and 2pm as mixed precip or very wet snow. Less than 1” of accumulation. Another 0.4” WV falls overnight, for a couple inches of wet snow. Wind starts at W 10, rises to W 40 in the afternoon (possibly affecting lift ops) and turns to WNW 30 overnight.

Sunday starts off with mid-level clouds and orographic flurries. Partly cloudy sky midday gives way to snow overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. Precip: 0.1” WV during the day, for an inch of new. Repeat that overnight. Wind: WNW 30 early drops to SW 10-15 in the afternoon and evening.

Monday and Tuesday each bring a few inches of new snow with moderate wind. Following that, the weather dries out and turns sunny. By Thursday, the free air freezing level will be 10,000′. WARM!

Gorge Wind

West wind of various sorts continues for the next three days before a switch to easterly wind on Monday. For Friday, offshore high pressure drives gorge westerlies. Clouds and showers in the western Gorge keep the wind speed and quality low to the west of Hood River all day. Steadiest, strongest wind will be found from Hood River to The Dalles this afternoon: 20-23mph. Stevenson will have 5-10 this morning and 10-13 this afternoon. Viento, as always, is the wild card. Let’s call it gusty, showery 20ish all day long. Not much will happen east of The Dalles today: 12-15 in the morning and 10-13 in the afternoon.

A weather system swings in from the NW on Saturday, increasing the rain in the morning. it appears that system will swing through mid-afternoon, after which the wind will pick up. Before that happens, we”ll have light westerlies from Stevenson to The Dalles with 10-13 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind: gusty 12-15 with rain from Stevenson to The Dalles. Gusty 21-26 east of The Dalles after 2pm. Sunday’s wind: light in the west early with 12-15 east of The Dalles. Sunday afternoon: 12-15 from Stevenson to Arlington. Remember that there’s a swap meet at Windance on Sunday morning. Monday brings a switch to E 10-15.

Road and Mountain Biking

The HRATS have their first trail work party of the season on the Whoopdee at 9:30am on Saturday. As for riding: Syncline was brown pow on Friday. Post is likely too wet and muddy to ride. Same for Whoopdee – please don’t, or you’ll damage the trails and volunteers will have to clean up after you rather than rebuilding new trails. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.

Upcoming Events

Friday morning is the Kickstand Coffee Run at 7am. On Saturday, sometimes there is a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am, and sometimes there is not. Same goes for the bootcamp workout in Sorosis Park in The Dalles at 10am. There is definitely the “Easter RunDay” at Shortt Supply Saturday morning at 9:30 – free community fun run.

The NW trail sisters have a female-identified bike ride at Sandy Ridge (weather permitting?) on Saturday. The first HRATS trail work party happens Saturday at 9:30am at the Whoopdee trail. There’s a swap meet at Windance on Sunday. The Monster and Sea Paddle is at Hood River’s Waterfront Park Saturday and Sunday. There’s free skiing at Summit in exchange for two cans of food on Saturday and Sunday. Skibowl has free skiing on Sunday.
