Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much is happening in the wind world to start Thursday, but it is raining! The wind will pick up this afternoon after a weather system swings through. Your best chance for wind Friday is early in the morning at Viento. On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll have easterlies. Looking closer at Thursday, we have pressures of 30.06/30.06/30.02 to start the day for gradients of 0.00 and 0.04. As a low moves inland today, the rain will taper off and the wind will pick up. Models suggest Arlington will be in the 11-14 range all day. Other locations start out light/variable. You’ll have to wait until early to mid afternoon for more. If you do, you’ll find 20-23ish (slight chance of more) from Mosier to Avery or Rufus with gusty 11-14 under partly cloudy sky west of Mosier. River flow readings are 63-100kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 69F. High pressure starts to build in on Friday, and by the afternoon, temps equalize across the Cascades. Your best shot is the early morning session at Viento, where you may find 15-18mph. The wind fades fast. At best, we’ll have 11-14 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Hood River, but even that much wind would surprise me. Light wind is more likely. Westerlies switch to easterlies for the weekend. Saturday’s peak wind looks like 20-25 midday with 15-20 in the afternoon at the usual spots (Rooster to Viento). Sunday’s forecast is currently 15-20mph. Easterlies stick around through at least Monday. There’s no clear sign of strong westerlies next week. Fingers crossed that something changes!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Thursday brings a showing of the bike movie “Reset” at River City at 8pm. The Post and Pint will shift to 5pm to accommodate this. The movie is free, and there’s a raffle to benefit the HRATS.

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is at 5pm this week (9/27).

Cycling

About 0.1” rain fell in the last 24 hours, and that’ll be enough to make a difference on trails exposed to open air. Under the trees, you’ll probably still find dusty conditions! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
