Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
The forecast is still on track for 5+ feet of snow on Mt. Hood by Monday morning. How’s that sound? Pretty good? That’s what I thought! If you’re hoping for mellow powder turns, set that hope aside. It’s going to be full-on storm skiing all weekend long.For Thursday, it’ll be partly cloudy with a few scattered flurries. The snow level will be 500-1000′ all day long. Wind: ;NW 20-25 during the day, facing to NW 10 in the evening and rising to W 25 after midnight as the next system approaches.
Snowfall starts up again on Friday morning and increases during the day. So does the wind. The snow level rises from 1000′ or less in the morning to 5000′ (briefly) in the afternoon before dropping slowly to 3000′ after midnight. About 0.6” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 5-6” of new. It’s possible there could be a brief period of mixed precip (20% chance) mid-afternoon before a return to snow. Intensity picks up around sunset: about 1.4” WV is expected overnight, for 11-15” of new snow. Wind will be W 25 early, SW 30-40 (60+ above treeline) in the afternoon, and WNW 35 in the evening.
Northwest flow aids orographics (terrain enhancement of precipitation) on Saturday for a massive snow pileup. Bring a shovel to extricate yourself from the ski area parking lots, or you will not escape between the snowfall and the drifting. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 1000′-1500′ in the afternoon, and 1500-2000′ overnight. About 1.1” WV falls during the day, for 10-13” of new. Another 0.8” WV falls overnight as 8-11” of fluffy powder. Given the wind, those totals could increase by 30%+. Wind will be WNW 35 early, climbing to NW 45 (affecting lifts, perhaps) in the afternoon and W 40 overnight.
Sunday will be a full-on blizzard on the mountain and on the passes. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ in the morning, 3500′ mid-day, 2000′ overnight, and will head for 0′ Monday morning. About 1.5” WV is forecast for Sunday daytime, for 14-17” of new snow. Another 0.8” WV arrives overnight, for 7-9” more. Wind will be W 40 early, W 50 mid-morning, W 60 in the afternoon, and W 35 overnight. This has potential to affect lifts. More snow arrives on Monday afternoon, possibly even down to sea level. Details are unclear at this point. What is clear is that temps will plummet next week, making for frigid, but possibly sunny, conditions on the mountain.
Gorge Wind Forecast
West wind continues for the next four days in some way or another. For Thursday, we’ll have 5-10 in the far west and east and 13-16 in the central gorge in the morning. By late morning, the wind picks up to gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Mosier. Friday starts light and variable and stays that way in the central Gorge. The western reaches, Rooster to Viento or so, pick up to gusty 20-25 out of the west. Saturday starts out calm and picks up to W 30-35+. Same on Sunday with gusts 40 50.COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Partly cloudy weather kicks of Thursday. A few sprinkles moves through during the day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 40 later. Light to moderate westerlies. 87% chance of rainbows. Friday starts with a mix of snow and rain and switches to rain. Temps will be just above freezing early and in the low 40’s later. Light and variable wind. 3% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks rainy and super windy. Temps will be int eh upper 30’s early and low 40’s later. Nuking west wind. 99.99% chance of rainbows and double rainbows. Repeat on Sunday. There are several Tai Chi classes at the Hood River adult center during the day. In the evening, there’s pickleball at 5 at The Dalles Readiness Center. There’s $5 yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6, Tai Chi at Our Savior church in Bingen at 6, and Zumba at 6:30 at Mid-valley elementary. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut.
