Thursday. Heat’s a’coming. Tomatoes are here. And now the weekend looks windy. Go figure.

DSC_0939
Well… yesterday’s wind came out of nowhere and caught me by surprise. I totally blew that one. Models were showing not much hope for wind at 7am when I wrote the forecast. When I returned from Portland mid-afternoon, it was definitely quite windy. So I went back and looked at the next model run. That one showed 23-26 in the afternoon. Forecasts and forecasters, sadly, aren’t all that much better than the models they use, although gut instinct is helpful many days. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Models today are also not showing all that much wind, but given the extent of the marine layer and the .07 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc) gradients, I think we’ll see some wind. The flip side is a predicted temp of 75 in Hood River and 74 in Portland. That’s not much temp differential today, so we’ll likely see less wind than yesterday. Expect 13-16 this morning, 16-19 midday, and 19-23 this afternoon. You’ll find wind from Swell to Arlington early, backing off to Stevenson to Mosier midday and Stevenson to Doug’s this afternoon.

Tomorrow may start off with lingering 10-13 but will back off to light conditions midday and maybe or maybe not rise to 10-13 late in the afternoon near Hood River. In other words, there’s not much going on tomorrow.

Despite the heat wave this weekend, it’s starting to look like we’ll see wind due to beastly offshore high pressure. As of this morning, Saturday looks like 5-10 early and 15-18 in the afternoon. Sunday looks light-n-variable early and 21-24 in the afternoon. Monday looks similar. Models are struggling to pin down the cooldown, but as of right now it looks like the big days will be Wednesday and Thursday.

Out on the coast, expect the following (north/central/south)… today: 15-20/20-25/30-40, SW 3′ @ 16 seconds. Tomorrow: 20-25/25-30/30-40, SW 3′ @16, W 4′ @ 10. Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, W 5′ @ 10. Sunday also looks windy.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’d like to give thanks this morning to Google for giving me self confidence and for saving me stress and money. Remember when we didn’t have the internet and we had to call a repairman every time something broke?

My washing machine started making weird noises last night and wouldn’t spin cycle. (That’s a verb, you know: “to spin cycle”) Anyway, I started feeling dread about spending a bunch of money to fix it, and then I remember… THE INTERNETS!

A quick Google later, and I was on the floor pulling hoses off to clean out the pump intake. An hour (and a lot of really gross water later), my washing machine was washing clothes again. That’s a good thing, because I generate more laundry than any single woman has a right to.

Back to the self-confidence thing… have you ever fixed a large appliance such as a stove, a washer, or a dryer? Have you changed your own oil? Give it a shot sometime, if you haven’t. There’s a tutorial on THE INTERNETS that will tell you how. You’ll come away from the experience with a sense of satisfaction and increased self-confidence. Plus, you’ll be able to fix your friends’ stuff too. And everyone loves a handywoman…

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear this morning and shall remain so for at least the next four days. Wait, stop. We need to talk. I saw a photo on Facebook last night of RIPE HEIRLOOM TOMATOES. You gardeners know how insane this is to have ripe tomatoes in Hood River in June. That’s 6 weeks early. I have blueberries already, and there are peppers on my plants. This too is insane. Now, back to your regularly scheduled weather forecast…

Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 80’s this afternoon. Light wind, no rainbows. Saturday and Sunday both look hot, with lows around 60 and highs in the mid 90’s. Record temps are in the upper 90’s Saturday and Sunday, so probably out of reach. However, Monday’s record is 95 and Tuesday’s is 90, so those might just fall with this heat wave.

Road and Mountain Biking

A friend of mine rode at 44 Road yesterday and was supposed to get me a dirt report. Sadly, we forgot to connect after his ride, so I don’t have a report. You will have to go ride there yourself! In road biking news, Friday looks like the lightest wind day of the next four. Today looks like the coolest, with highs in the 90’s starting Saturday. Choose wisely and ride early.

I love road biking, and if you’re reading this, you do too. The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the best. You’ll ride beautiful, remote, quiet, traffic-free roads. And you’ll do it with support, a nice touch for 50+ mile loops through the woods or farm country. Combine the loops to make a century route that gets most of the climbing done early. There’s also a short 11-mile Family Fun Ride. All proceeds support the Trout Lake schools, grange, and fire department.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the Post n’ Pint bike ride. Go all out as fast as you can for a couple of hours and you’ll earn a free pint of beer. Today’s also pickleball at 5:30 at Westside Elementary, and there are two community yoga classes, one at 8am at Flow and one at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi.

Tomorrow morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee run. Meet at 13th and State, run 4 miles, and you’ll get a free coffee and donut. Make that your exercise, because tomorrow night’s First Friday in Hood River.

Saturday’s Crossfit Hood River’s anniversary party, a windsurfing race at the Event Site, a garden party at Pacific Hermitage in White Salmon (combining weeding, tea and spirituality/mindfulness), and the Xdog Pine Hollow standup paddle race, followed by the Xdog Triathlon on Sunday.

And don’t forget about the Anson’s Bike Buddies used bike Drive at the Crates Building in The Dalles on Saturday from 11-3. If you would like to help a kid receive a new bike, you can donate money. It costs about $25 to fix up a bike for a kid, so every $25 you donate will get a kid a set of wheels. And… your donations are tax-deductible.

Registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up.

Have an awesome day today!
