Wednesday. Say goodbye to spring and hello to summer. Your peppers will love this weekend!

I wrote all the other sections of the forecast this morning and started my cut n’ paste mission. It was at that point that I realized I hadn’t written the wind forecast anywhere but in my head. Oops. I think that has something to do with Mother Nature’s lackadaisical wind performance over the next 5 or so days. In addition, the excitement in the models occurs after the 47-frame breakdown in this morning’s WRF-GFS. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Today’s starting off partly cloudy in Hood River with .04 (pdx-dls), .05 (dls-psc) and .29 (EPH-pdt), which I’m tracking just for the f**k of it. Wind at 7am was in the 15-18 range or so east of the cloud line and 10-13 under the clouds. Models suggest we’ll see 10-13 under the clouds and 13-16 east of the clouds through midday. They then suggest a midday lull followed by 12-15 under the clouds and 15-18 in the sun. The exact locations may vary, and offer is not valid in all locations, but you’ll generally find more wind east of Mosier than west of Mosier today. River water temp is 63 degrees.

Tomorrow looks like 10-13 under the clouds and 13-16 in the sunshine all day. With the clouds burning back, that probably means Hood River eastward for the strongest wind. Maybe Mosier eastward. Friday starts with 5-10 and picks up to 10-13 in the afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to Mosier.

As of right now, the wind looks light and variable on Saturday and light west on Sunday. Models aren’t agreeing on the big cooldown (models struggle with high pressure breakdowns), but it’s not looking like Monday (even though it was looking that way yesterday). Tuesday looks more likely at this point.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was driving to White Salmon yesterday afternoon, and I noticed that it was raining over the west side of Hood River. Marine clouds extended to Mosier. This got me thinking.

In winter and spring, the distance between where the rain is falling from low clouds and where the clouds end is short. That causes lots of rainbows. Yesterday, however, that distance was large. And there were no rainbows because the sun was too far from the raindrops.

I’m wondering if this has to do with warmer temps, drier air, sun angle, or what. You may be thinking that this musing is nonsensical and pointless. For me, it’s high impact. It raises questions of rainbow predicting accuracy for me. Plus, I want to see rainbows. If the rain-cloudline distance is longer this time of year, we’ll see less rainbows, and that makes me sad.

Okay, okay. My point is this: if something piques your curiosity, think about it. Investigate it. Even if it’s nonsensical to others. If it’s important to you, you’ll learn and grow just by using your mind. You’ve got a mind. Use it or lose it.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy this morning. Mostly cloudy, maybe. It shall remain so today, with perhaps a bit more sun this afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. 1% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts out partly cloudy and clears up by the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. No rainbows.

Friday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Saturday and Sunday both top out with temps in the mid 90’s.

Road and Mountain Biking

I was driving home from White Salmon last night and saw rain falling on Post Canyon. I don’t know if it was enough rain to impact the trails, but it was raining. Therefore, it’s worth riding today if you have time. If you want to ride your road bike, you will find light wind and reasonable temps on Friday. The wind will be light on the weekend, but the high temps will top out in the mid 90’s. Keep that in mind when planning.

I love road biking, and if you’re reading this, you do too. The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the best. You’ll ride beautiful, remote, quiet, traffic-free roads. And you’ll do it with support, a nice touch for 50+ mile loops through the woods or farm country. Combine the loops to make a century route that gets most of the climbing done early. There’s also a short 11-mile Family Fun Ride. All proceeds support the Trout Lake schools, grange, and fire department.

Upcoming Events

Tonight’s the Post n’ Pinot women’s mountain bike ride. Meet at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers or at 6 at the bottom of Post Canyon Road. If you ride, you’ll get a glass of wine and a raffle tickeet. Also tonight, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30 and there’s sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina at 6.

Tomorrow night’s the race-pace Post n’ Pint bike ride, preparing your legs for race season. Do the 2 hour ride which leaves Dirty Fingers at 5:30 and you’ll get a free pint of beer. Tomorrow’s also Pickleball at Westside Elementary at 5:30. There are two free yoga classes tomorrow: 8am at Flow and 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi.

This weekend is Crossfit Hood River’s anniversary party, a standup paddle race in Pine Hollow, the Pine Hollow Triathlon, and an Anson’s bike Buddies used bikes drive at the Crates Building in The Dalles from 11 to 3 on Saturday – drop off your bikes for a tax writeoff, and Anson will get your old bike to a kid in need. Theoretically, there’s a windsurfing race at the Event Site on Saturday.

And my favorite weekend event? There’s a garden party on Saturday at Pacific Hermitage. Meal at 11am. Garden party at 1pm. Tea at 3pm. This is your opportunity to both do a good deed for the community and to meet some cool people.

Registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up.

Have an awesome day today!
