First Friday. Heat wave + wind = nice weekend in the Gorge.

DSC_9480
I see nearly-glassy conditions on the river outside my window this morning. Kinda glassy is like being kinda pregnant, isn’t it? Either it’s glassy or not, and you’re jonesing to wakeboard or row your sculling shell, or you’re not. You’re probably not jonesing for those things this morning, and if you’re at all like me, you’re jonesing for a cup of coffee and nothing else. Anyway, you’ll have some wind this weekend, if that’s what you’re jonesing for, and you’ll find that wind both here and at the coast. Our savior this weekend during the heat wave? Strong high pressure in the Pacific. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Wait… I just remembered, finally: launching and landing of kites is done for the year at the Event Site. Whew. Now I can delete that email from my inbox! On to the forecast: Although there’s not much wind this morning and not much in the way of marine clouds (nearly nothing in cloud land, to be more precise), there’s a .06 (pdx-dls) and .01 (dls-psc) gradient. We do have a little wind at the eastern beaches early, but you can ignore that. Expect 5-10 or less for much of the day, picking up late in the afternoon to 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier.

Tomorrow starts with 5-10 and picks up to 13-16 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier, maybe to The Dalles too. Expect 5-10 on Sunday morning with 13-16 early in the afternoon and 17-21 late in the afternoon. You’ll find the strongest wind on Sunday from Stevenson to Mosier with the Rowena stretch likely to join late in the day.

Models are struggling with the cooldown next week, but as of this morning, they are predicting 20+ every day next week. But you know how I feel about those long-term models… Not so reliable.

More reliable is the coast forecast for the next few days (north/central/south). Today: 20-25/25-30/30-40, SW 3′ @ 15 seconds and W 4′ @ 10 seconds. Tomorrow: 15-20/20-25/30-35, W 6′ @ 10. Sunday: 20-25/25-30/30-35, W 6′ @ 9.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was driving home from class last night thinking about stuff, because what else do you do at 11pm on I-84 eastbound? Here’s what I was thinking: Sometimes when we contemplate a course of action, we think through all the steps and possible outcomes. And sometimes we keep all the possible outcomes of the first step open, and sometimes we don’t. That second possibility is problematic. Here’s a concrete example:

Say you’re into someone. You could ask that person out. They might say no. They might tell their friends you asked them out. Their friends might tease you. Their friends might tell other people, and those people might know you got rejected. And then none of those people will want to be asked out by you, and you’ve ruined your chances with the entire social circle. Sound somewhat familiar?

We get pulled into these chains of reasoning. But here’s the thing: we tend to follow one chain, and the more steps between the original action and the final outcome, the more chances there are for error. If we’re kind wrong about the first (she/he says maybe, not no), then we’re even more wrong about the second, and more wrong about the third.

We tend to follow chains, rather than creating possible outcomes, and those chains tend to be negative. If you catch yourself doing that, see if you can shift to creating outcomes for just the first action (she could say yes, no, maybe; she could be ecstatic, flattered, or flustered; she already packed the U-haul…) and skip the compounding errors. Cuz we can’t know what’s going to happen, and if we let the imaginary chain of events stop us, we aren’t going to live life to the fullest. Carpe diem, folks.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s clear outside, and nothing shall change. Expect a sunny day with temps in the mid 50’s early and the mid 80’s later. Light wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks warmer, and if it’s possible to be such a thing, sunnier. Temps will be in the mid 50s’ early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind becoming moderate. No rainbows. Expect exactly the same thing Sunday. Monday looks similarly toasty, but windier. I am worried that we are done with rainbows for the summer. This makes me look forward to autumn.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have a dirt report from the 44 Road from two days ago: apparently it’s a bit damp up high and not yet blown out and dusty down low. I’m not sure how to interpret that, and I don’t know what “high” and “low” refer to, but it’s better than nothing! Road biking will be off the charts today with light wind. Get it early, because temps in the mid 80’s will feel hot on the blacktop. It’s going to be mighty hot for riding of any sort this weekend. Ride early and carry lots of water.

I love road biking, and if you’re reading this, you do too. The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the best. You’ll ride beautiful, remote, quiet, traffic-free roads. And you’ll do it with support, a nice touch for 50+ mile loops through the woods or farm country. Combine the loops to make a century route that gets most of the climbing done early. There’s also a short 11-mile Family Fun Ride. All proceeds support the Trout Lake schools, grange, and fire department.

Upcoming Events

Every Friday brings you a chance to run 4 miles in exchange for a cup of coffee and a donut. Yesterday I wrote that you’d be jogging for a beer. I’m not sure where that came from… maybe I was thinking about the Post n’ Pint. Meet at Kickstand Coffee at 13th and State in Hood River at 7am. Tonight is first Friday in Hood River, and if you’d like to see surf and ski and other cool photos, swing by Naked Winery for Grant Myrdal’s show. Grant’s the guy who takes your photo at Meadows and out on the river.

Tomorrow’s a Gorge Cup windsurfing race at the Event Site, wind permitting. There’s a standup paddle race in Pine Hollow tomorrow and the Pine Hollow triathlon on Sunday. The tri club has a trail run at Post canyon at 8am tomorrow, there’s pickleball at Westside Elementr7 at 9:30, and there’s a Garden Party at Pacific Hermitage with your local Theravada Buddhist forest monks.

If you have a bike that’s just taking up space, consider donating it to Anson’s Bike Buddies on Saturday. They’ll be at the Crates Building in The Dalles taking used bikes from 10 to 3. You’ll get a tax writeoff, and Anson will fix up the bike and get it to a kid in need.

Registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up.

Have an awesome day today!
