Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re not picky about your wind direction, you’ll have several opportunities in the next several days to get on the river. With high temps in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s over the next four days, getting on the river should be a pleasant thing to do!

For Thursday, we’ll have easterlies in response to inland high pressure. By mid-morning, Rooster, Stevenson, and Viento should all be in the 20-25 range. The wind holds, as easterlies do, through early afternoon and then backs off, landing at 15-20. River flow is 70,100cfs and temp is 56 degrees.

A weak cold front swings through on Friday and very strong offshore high pressure builds behind it. With rain falling in the western Gorge, it’s likely you’ll have to drive east of The Dalles for the steadiest wind. That said… expect 10-13 to start the day. The wind quickly builds to 21-25+ from Stevenson to Doug’s for a couple hours before the rain moves in. It then gets very gusty under the clouds. East of the clouds, there’s a quick build to gusty 30-33 from The Dalles to Threemile. It appears the wind will fade after 3pm, so you’ll want to drive pre-emptively. Get there by noon. It’s worth noting that this is actually a pretty darn good setup, especially this late in the season. It’s worth investing some of your time if you can.

Saturday’s a transition day: post frontal westerlies at 10-13 in the morning turn around to widespread easterlies at 10-15 in the afternoon. That wind will materialize all the way from Stevenson to Arlington, but probably not at Rooster. You’ll have sunshine along with the easterlies. Sunday’s a little tricky to predict, as it appears the east side cool-pool will be deep enough to send the easterlies over the Cascade Crest. That’ll decrease the wind below gradient expectations at river level. For now, let’s call it 25-30 Sunday and Monday (when the cold pool will be shallower).

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast was on winter break, but it’s back because of coastal wind… Swell forecast by NWS. Wind: north coast/central coast/south coast. Thursday: 5-10/10-15/20-25, W swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Friday: 20-25/25-30/30-35, W 5′ @ 12. Saturday: 20-25/25-30/35-45, W 9′ @ 12. Sunday: side-off 15-20 everywhere with 7′ west swell.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky Thursday morning might add a few upper clouds later, but mostly it’ll just be sunny and awesome. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 60’s later. Light east flow. No rainbows. Friday starts cloudy with sprinkles and turns partly sunny in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s later. Strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks sunny. Temps will be near 40 early and near 60 later. Light west wind early, light east wind in the afternoon. No rainbows. Next chance of frost is just for areas away from the Columbia on Sunday morning.

Road and Mountain Biking

We’ve had quite a bit of rain in the last week, and I haven’t tested the trails to see if they’ve returned to brown pow status. Try Syncline for a sure thing. Remember that the southern half of Whoopdee has been logged (is gone). Riding Underwood? No parking at the trailhead – you’ll need to drive ½ mile east of the trailhead and park there. There’s an HRATS trail work party in Post, meeting at Family Man, on 10/26 at 9:30am.

Upcoming Events

Community events today start with by-donation yoga at Flow at 8:30. There are several Tai Chi classes at the Hood River adult center during the day. In the evening, there’s pickleball at 5 at The Dalles Readiness Center. There’s $5 yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6, Tai Chi at Our Savior church in Bingen at 6, and Zumba at 6:30 at Mid-valley elementary. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

There’s a work party meeting at Family Man at 9:30 on 10/26. Also on 10/26, OMSI has the annual American Meteorological Society Oregon Winter Weather Conference with speaker Dr. Cliff Mass of the University of Washington. That’s from 9am to noon.
