Gorge Wind Forecast

The weather for the next several days contains a bit of a rarity for the PNW – strong fronts dropping in from the north combine with strong offshore high pressure for continuing Gorge westerlies. That said, we’ll have rain, clouds, and chilly high temperatures. For Thursday, a cold front drops in from the north and strong high pressure holds off the coast. Early gradients were .11 and .09, a good sign for wind. Expect gusty westerlies at 17-20+ this morning through the whole Gorge. The western Gorge will likely hold at gusty 17-20. Rowena to Arlington (maybe Mosier too) will climb to gusty 24-28 after mid-morning and hold through mid-afternoon.

Another system arrives from the north on Friday for a nearly identical setup. 18-22 to start the day from Viento to Moiser with 12-15 in the eastern Gorge. The west holds in the teens as rain falls from late morning on. Launches east of The Dalles pick up to gusty 25-28 and hold through sunset.

Saturday looks cloudy, showery, and chilly (mid-50’s) with light west wind. Sunday’s forecast currently looks like light east wind. Temps will languish in the mid 50’s through the weekend, making watersports chilly and forcing you to pull out warmer clothes no matter what activity you choose. Oh,, I almost forgot – the last windsports swap meet of the season is on Saturday at Luhr Jensen.

Road and Mountain Biking

Logging is finished on the Whoopdee trail. The southern 1/3 of the trail is gone, but you are welcome to go up there and ride and check it out. Ronnoc trail is still open and good to go, as is the climb out. Work parties coming soon. In other news… Tack alert for all trails! 130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in the 150 area are closed for timber harvesting. Upper 8 Track is now closed due to logging. Motorized use is now permitted in Post (thanks, rain!), east side and Middle Mountain. There is a work party on the 140 Trail on Saturday – meet at 9am at Family Man.

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
