Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s our best chance for a strong day of westerlies. Models have backed off on what they initially predicted, but there will still be plenty of wind for river time. Moderate westerlies are the plan for Monday and Wednesday with a no-wind day sandwiched in between.

Let’s look at Sunday. The initial band of rain stayed much farther west than models predicted. This has gradients at 0.13 (pdx-dls) and 0.09 (dls-psc). The precip model suggests rain will push as far as The Dalles this afternoon. It also suggests the western Gorge will destabilize. So, your best bets are the western Gorge (probably Mosier) this morning and out east this afternoon. Honestly, this is a very tricky forecast. If the clouds hold where they are, you’re likely to find 25-29 from Viento to Mosier this morning (Viento was reading 32 pre-dawn). East of there: 15-18 and building. As the rain and instability increases later, head east of The Dalles for 25-29, perhaps 30-33 at Doug’s or The Wall. River flow is 71,400cfs, river temp is 62F, and high temp forecast is a mere 56F. Brrrr! Bring that warmer wetsuit!

Monday brings a post-frontal environment with chilly temps (39 early) and moderate westerlies. The wind location and strength will bounce around a bit. Expect 12-15 from Viento to Mosier early with 9-12 out east. Midday: 14-17 from Stevenson to Rufus. It appears the wind will back off to 12-15 (Stevenson to The Dalles) in the afternoon and fade even more out east. High temp: 55F.

Tuesday looks light and variable with a frosty start. Wednesday’s forecast is currently in the 20-25 range, but rain is also forecast. You’ll be driving east of The Dalles for the wind. Have a great day!

Cycling

Please help the HRATS out: sign up to volunteer for the Post Canyon Enduro the weekend of the 15th. HRATS receives money from the event organizers, and that money goes towards building and repairing trails. SDS and Kreps lands have reopened. Washington DNR land is also open now. All other trails are open at this time. Motorized use is still not allowed in areas where it was closed due to fire season. In other news… thanks to last week’s rain, the dirt is nearly perfect in most places. More rain is coming, so get ready for more brown pow!
