Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate westerlies today and Wednesday alternate with not-windy Tuesday and Thursday. For Monday, we’re in a post-frontal environment with strong high pressure offshore and high pressure building inland. It looks like we’ll have enough gradient to get on the river. Morning westerlies will be 10-13 in the west and 14-17 east of The Dalles. Give the wind a few hours to steady out. You’ll find 18-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 east of The Dalles. Models suggest evening wind will fade to 12-15 all through the Gorge. River flow is 73,800cfs, river temp is 61F, and high temp forecast is 56F.

A cold front approaching the coast on Tuesday combines with a weak inland ridge of high pressure. Models aren’t quite in agreement on the early wind: it could be west 5-10. That’s normally not much to talk about but would have a big impact on morning temps. Anyway, the rest of the day looks light and variable or light westerly at 5mph or less. High temp: 57F.

That cold front swings through on Tuesday night and leaves us post-frontal on Wednesday. The day starts with gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light westerlies to the east. Midday: gusty 23-26 from Lyle to Rufus with gusty 11-14 in the western Gorge. Models like the idea of rain Wednesday afternoon in the west, so you’ll probably have to move yourself east. Late afternoon wind: 22-25 from Mosier (or Lyle) to Rufus with gusty 17-20 in the west, maybe. Thursday looks light and variable. We then head into the extended forecast. Models are all over the place, so there’s no point in guessing about long-range wind prospects. Have a great week!

Cycling

Please help the HRATS out: sign up to volunteer for the Post Canyon Enduro the weekend of the 15th. HRATS receives money from the event organizers, and that money goes towards building and repairing trails. SDS and Kreps lands have reopened. Washington DNR land is also open now. All other trails are open at this time. Motorized use is still not allowed in areas where it was closed due to fire season. In other news… thanks to last week’s rain, the dirt is nearly perfect in most places. More rain is coming, so get ready for more brown pow!
