Gorge Wind Forecast

Fall-style westerlies continue… Saturday sees a weak ridge move across the NW with a cold front pushing closer in the offshore waters. Moderate westerlies result. As that front swings though on Sunday, high pressure builds offshore. This drives stronger west wind, but probably not nuking-strong. Another round of moderate westerlies is on tap for Monday followed by a no-wind day on Tuesday.

Gradients to start Saturday were 0.06 and 0.05, enough to drive moderate westerlies. The day starts with 7-10ish all through the Gorge. Exception, of course, is Viento, where you’ll find mid-teens to start. Midday westerlies are forecast at 10-13 in the west and gusty 16-20 east of The Dalles to Threemile. Afternoon wind gets a nudge upwards from that offshore cold front; you’ll find gusty 14-17 in the western Gorge with continued gusty 16-20 out east. River flow is 55,200cfs (about half of yesterday), river temp is 62F, and high temp forecast is 61F. Consider a warmer wetsuit!

That cold front drives eastward on Sunday morning. Wind-wise, the day starts with gusty 23-28 from Viento to Rufus with 13-16 at Arlington and 7-10 at Stevenson. The western Gorge will be cloudy most of the day (and sprinkly in the afternoon). Drive. From Doug’s (or maybe Avery) eastward, you’ll find 26-30 in the afternoon. It is possible that reality could outperform models; very strong offshore high pressure tends to do that. High temp: just 56F in Hood River and 60F in Arlington where “patchy blowing dust” is in the forecast. That’s a good sign for wind!

Moving on to Monday… the day starts with 11-14 from Viento to The Dalles with 7-10 to the east and west. Afternoon westerlies rise to 14-17 from Viento to The Dalles with 10-13 to the east and west. High temp on Monday: 55F. Tuesday looks light and variable all day. Enjoy!

Cycling

Please help the HRATS out: sign up to volunteer for the Post Canyon Enduro the weekend of the 15th. HRATS receives money from the event organizers, and that money goes towards building and repairing trails. SDS and Kreps lands have reopened. Washington DNR land is also open now. All other trails are open at this time. Motorized use is still not allowed in areas where it was closed due to fire season. In other news… thanks to last week’s rain, the dirt is nearly perfect in most places. More rain is coming, so get ready for more brown pow!
