Gorge Wind Forecast

The general picture for the next several days is calm wind for Sunday and Monday. After that, we head into at least a couple days where a weak offshore low sends cooler marine air into the metro area. That’ll combine with heat-driven low pressure in the desert for westerly wind. Over that 48 hour period, the atmosphere will be somewhat unstable due to the offshore low, leading to gustiness and potentially unreliable wind. After Wednesday, models disagree on the details, with the GFS being the scenario you should vote for…

For Sunday, it’ll be warm and windless. At best, we’ll see W 5 in the morning and E 5 in the afternoon. Call it “light and variable” and be done with it. River temp is 52 degrees. Flow is a mind-boggling 512kcfs (too bad it’s not blowing 40!). Monday looks calm.

Changes occur on Monday night into Tuesday as the offshore low pushes cooler air into the Willamette Valley. The day starts with westerlies at 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. We’ll have gusty 24-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Atmospheric instability will impact the wind quality. Same goes for Wednesday, when the wind is forecast to max out in the 27-31 range (models actually disagree, with the Euro in the 22-26 range) from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. Vote for the GFS on Thursday, when strong westerly flow combines with a stable atmosphere for a big day in the Gorge.

BONUS: Jones Sunday: 10-13. Monday: 21-24. Tuesday: 17-20. Sauvie’s Sunday: 12-15. Monday: 15-18 late. Tuesday: 5-10. Coast: really not much happening at all. Try surfing? Sunday: W swell 7′ @ 12 seconds. Monday: 5′ @ 11. Tuesday: 5′ @ 11.

Random Morning Thoughts

I locked my cat in a room by herself last night because she’s developed an annoying habit of waking me up in the wee hours of the morning. Needless to say, I slept much better. However, I felt and still feel a bit guilty about this.

When this situation arises with another human, we are generally able to check out whether the feeling of guilt is justified. We can even have a conversation that prevents guilt from arising in the first place. For example, we can say something like, “Babe, I want to sleep on the couch tonight. It’s about my need for a good night’s sleep – nothing about you.” That might be an easy conversation to have. Others might be more difficult.

But the more we avoid having these little conversations, the more likely it is that we’ll make assumptions (like me assuming my cat is hurt by being locked in another room). And the more we avoid conversations, the more negative energy, the more resentment/guilt/shame/fear is likely to build. So, STOP IT! Start communicating. It might feel awkward and difficult, but you’ll be amazed how much better things work out down the road.

Need a way to start? How about transparency: “Hey, I would like to try communicating differently. How does that sound to you?” Communication. Pretty amazing stuff. Now, if only my cat spoke English! Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

The 44 Trails Association is reported that Knebal, Eightmile and Bottle Prairie are open. Surveyor’s still has trees down. Lake Branch Road is snow-covered from the top of the big climb to Lost Lake. I received an unconfirmed report that Vista Ridge is open. Ride at your own risk!

Wildflowers are out all over the place, and Post Canyon is full of shuttlers. Gentle reminder: uphill traffic has the right of way, EVEN IF YOU’RE RUNNING STRAVA! The Cascadia Dirt Cup is in Post Canyon next Saturday, so you’ll want to make other plans. If you volunteer as race support, you’ll be helping the HRATS earn some cash. Hood River County has a work party on the Pinemont Loop (aka Kitchen Sink) next Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include by-donation yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 9. There’s all-ages touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 11. Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River has free art classes for parent-accompanied kids from 1-3 today and almost every Sunday. Sailboat races continue in Cascade Locks today, and the FFA plant sale is at Hood River Valley High.

Coming up next week, we’ve got a showing of The Reluctant Radical, a film about a Gorge Local’s climate activism. That’s Tuesday at 6:30 at Riverside Church in Hood River. The Cascadia Dirt Cup Enduro race is in Post Canyon next Saturday – if you volunteer to help out, you’ll be earning cash for the local trails organization. There’s also a trail work party at Pinemont next Saturday morning, and there’s a swap meet next Sunday at Windance. There’s a plant share/swap at Rockford Grange next Saturday from 2pm to 5pm.
