Gorge Wind Forecast

Monday will have almost no wind at all, unless you’d like to count easterlies at 5mph or less this afternoon between Home Valley and Rooster Rock. The rest of the week looks completely different, with very strong westerlies. That said, the Gorge will be hiding in a stable marine layer under unstable upper atmosphere air. This could have implications for the steadiness and the reliability of the wind.

For Tuesday, the day starts with 18-22 from Stevenson to Hood River. As the marine layer in Portland combines with a powerful heat low in the desert, the wind will slowly pick up. Max gradients and wind actually look to be late in the afternoon with 27-31 from Stevenson to The Dalles. If you want less wind than that, just head out on the river earlier in the day! Temp is 53 degrees. Flow is 467 kcfs.

That flow’s going to come into play on Wednesday and Thursday as the focus of the wind shifts east of Hood River – there’s way too much water for the Rufus stretch to be good (or safe). On Wednesday morning, marine clouds are likely to make it into HR, giving us dawn patrol of 26-30 from Mosier to Arlington. By late morning, the wind will hit 30-35 from Mosier to Arlington and stay that way. One monkey wrench on Wednesday will be atmospheric instability; this could make the wind gusty, and thunderstorms could potential shut things down. That said, lower elevation, at least in the west, will be extremely stable, so we could see strong wind below elevated thunderstorms. It’s hard to say what the wind will be near Hood River – models predict clouds all day in the western Gorge…

Thursday looks similar to Wednesday, with perhaps just a touch less wind. That said, the atmosphere looks more stable in the afternoon as upper flow shifts to the NW, meaning the wind could actually be stronger. It’s also more likely to blow right in Hood River, with strong wind making it all the way east to Arlington. Call it 28-32 all day long. Friday currently looks like 15-18, a relief for those of you who prefer less wind!

Random Morning Thoughts

Let’s talk about my cat again. I still feel guilty for locking her in the bedroom – I did it again last night, but boy did I sleep well. Sleep is one of the most important resources we have. Not getting enough sleep over an extended period of time can lead to all sorts of deficits in functioning. I’m guessing I don’t have to convince you of this.

There are times where we simply cannot get enough sleep. Kids, work, life responsibilities, maybe even dawn patrol keeps us from getting enough shut-eye. We can respond to this by pushing ourselves to keep going. Or, we can decide to set aside other responsibilities and … get some damned sleep!

It only takes a couple of nights of good sleep to get back to good functioning. But it can be very difficult to allow ourselves to set aside the drive to Get Stuff Done. Think of it this way: you aren’t going to get anything done if you’re tired and miserable. You can apply this philosophy to other aspects of your life. If you aren’t carving out space for self-care (recreation, meditation, socialization), you’re going to turn into a useless, grumpy lump of humanity.

Spend some time figuring out how you can give yourself permission to take care of yourself. And then do it. Even if it means locking the cat in a different room for a couple of nights. May you be well. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s going to be fucking hot today, so hot that I’m going to wear a dress. Sunshine all day leads to temps in the low 50’s early and low 90’s this afternoon. Calm wind. No rainbows. Tuesday sees a marine push in the western Gorge but probably no clouds in Hood River. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong westerlies. Chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. 15% chance of rainbows. Wednesday sees clouds push into Hood River, and perhaps stay partly cloudy all day. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 70’s in the afternoon. Very strong west wind. Chance of thunder. 15% chance of rainbows.
